Hi, my name's Ed Kidd.
I'm a guitar teacher here in Nashua.

[C]
I'm going to show you some [D] bends and a simple [Em] solo
[Gm] When we bend on the guitar
We want to bend the note
to [Em] another note
so
[D] Let's take we'll take an A minor [Em] pentatonic
[A] One on the fifth position so my first finger is at the fifth fret
This is an A note
This is an A minor pentatonic that I'm using
It might be a blues scale if I add [D] another note
[Em]
[Am] [Em] [Am]
[F] [A] So my first [C] finger fourth [D] and then first [E]
[D] third
first [Am] third first [E] third first fourth [Am] first fourth
[Em] [E] [C] [A]
[E] [A] A minor pentatonic it is fairly easy to bend here because we're towards the middle of the neck
The easiest place is probably at the [G] 12th fret
That's where the string is the [E] slackest because the 12th fret divides
the length of the string exactly in half
[Am] The fifth position is [Em] easy [Am] enough
[D] It helps to have [G] fairly light strings.
These are light gauge.
[D] They start with a 10
It's hard to harder to bend the third string on an acoustic because it's much thicker
[Em] I'm going to bend the third string first second third
[D]
the [F] seventh fret
[C] four [D] five six seven
Is the D [Gm] note I'm going to [D] bend this D
So [E] it sounds like the E string [D] and a bend that D
[E] Folding
[A] you might slide it first to get your ear oriented to the note that you're trying to [D] achieve
[Eb] [A] [E]
I'm using two fingers notice that I'm not trying to bend with just [A] my third finger
I may be able to do that, but I have less [C] control
[E] And when I want to do things like
Shimmer the [A] note add a vibrato after it's bent.
I would never be [B] able to do that with just my third finger
[A] [Am]
We're not really going to work on [Em]
vibrato
with bends today
We're going to do the lead to house of the rising Sun
So I'm going to have a couple of [D] bends the D to E
[E]
[D] And [Gm] the G note here on the eighth fret I use my [Em] pinky
Some people particularly if they're not my student might use their third finger to bend I find that
[Am]
It keeps me [Bb] in position better if I learn to bend with my fourth finger
[Am]
And I still add on the strength of my [E] third and second so if your fourth finger is weak
It doesn't matter because you're being helped along with your third and second finger
I'm going to slide this G two frets
[Am] It sounds like an a which is also
[Gb] My first finger on the fifth fret of the first [A] string that is an a as well
if I execute my
Bend properly there should these notes should be perfectly in unison
[D] [A]
[E]
D to E
So I [A] play
[Am]
[E] Reach down the fourth I go out of position
[B] Bend the D to an E
[A] And bend it back
See how I do that
[Am]
Now I'm going to bend the G to an A
Twice three times
[D]
[Am] That's a pre bend when I bend it
[D] [E]
[D] [Am]
Bend it again twice
[E] Again
[D] [A] [C]
This [E] is a hammer on I
[A] [E]
Did that with an up up?
[Em] You can use it down up.
[E]
[Am] [Gbm] [E]
[A] I'm hitting the open [Eb] a string when I [E] do this fifth [A] string
[Am] [A]
[Am]
That's the [E] second and first string together
[A] [Am]
[A] [E]
