This song of mine has [G] been probably the most pivotal song of my career because it was also it was my [Ab] first Grammy nomination
And it [G] was also the first hit [Db] for Kathy Matea.
[N] I wrote this song at a Canadian Folk Festival where I had been required
through a seminar of songwriters to write a new song for this songwriters seminar and
I stayed up the night before and had written this short story about a couple named Eddie and Rita called love at the five and dime [G] and
Plagiarized myself spent 20 minutes writing this song thought I'd never play it again
And that's what it ended up being a song about a Woolworth store and a couple named Eddie and Rita
Woolworth stores are closing all over the United States
Don't know how long they'll be here here in the UK
But if you never [Dm] waltz the aisles and you've never bought a [E] Christmas cracker there, maybe you ought to go [G] while you still can
[Bb]
[Eb] [Bb]
Rita was 16 years Just not
[Eb] She made a [Bb] Woolworth counter shine and Eddie was a sweet romancer and a darn good [Eb] dancer
And it was the isles [Bb] of fun.
Eddie played the steel guitar
And his mama cried cuz he played in the [Eb] bars
And he kept young Rita out [Bb] late at night
So they married up in Napoli
Lost a child in Tennessee
[Eb] Still that love [Bb] survive
Cuz they'd sing
Dance a little closer to me
[Eb] Dance a little closer [Bb] now
Dance a little closer tonight
[Cm]
Dance [Bb] a little closer [Gm] to me
It's closing [Bb] time and love's on the sale tonight.
It's a five and dime
One of the boys in Eddie's bed
Took a shot of Rita's hand
[Eb] So Eddie ran off [Bb] with the baseman's wife.
Oh, but he was back by Jonah
Singing a different tune
[Gm] [Eb] Sporting Miss Rita [Bb] back by his side
He sang
Dance a little closer to me
Dance [Cm] a little closer [Bb] now
Dance a little closer [Cm] tonight
Dance [Bb] a little closer tonight
Dance a little closer to me
It's closing time and love's on the sale tonight.
It's a five and dime
Eddie traveled with a foreign band
Till our tribes took his hand
[Eb] Now he sells insurance on [Bb] the side
And Rita's got her house to keep
She writes time-story novels of a love so [Eb] sweet
They dance to the radio [Bb] late at night
And still see her
Sing, dance a little closer to [Eb] me
Dance a little [Bb] closer now
Dance a little closer [Eb] tonight
Dance [Bb] a little closer to [Cm] me
Hey it's closing [Bb] time
[F] Love's on the sale
Tonight, at that [Bb] five-nine
Rita was 16 years
Hazel eyes I'm just not hearing
[Eb] She really made a war [Bb] work counter shine
And Eddie was a sweet romancer
I heard he was a darn good [Eb] dancer
And they'd go host the [Bb] Isles of Fife and Dine
[Eb] [Bb]
We could all go tomorrow and take [Eb] a date
Well, go host the Isles of [Bb] Fife and Dine
[N]
