[B] This is a title song for my first album and it's a song about friendships and the type of friendships that you make when you're a [Abm] small child
that last all the way [B] up till you're a big child.
Kind of from first teeth to second teeth in other words.
I grew up here in Austin, Texas.
I spent my girlhood with a friend named Mary Margaret watching the sun come up and the sun go down over Mount Vannel wondering how the heck I was ever going to get out of here.
Now I spend a great deal of time wondering if I can just slip by here for a couple of days a month.
Because Mount Vannel may not be the tallest mountain in the world but it's home.
Mary Margaret and I used to ride our bicycles up to this place on Mount Vannel.
We'd stop by every 7-Eleven store on the way up there.
Clean out the vending machines, the bottle caps.
We'd sit up there when the sun went down, watch the lights come on in town.
Shoot those bottle caps off at the lights town.
Every once in a while you'd flick one just right and the light would go out.
Say, by God I got that one.
Five miles away but I got that one.
There's a light beyond these woods, Mary Margaret.
Do you think that we will go there and see [Gb] what makes [B] it shine, [E] Mary Margaret?
[B]
[E]
[Abm] Some of us morning [B] and we talked all night.
You [Gb] know we've made big plans [B] for 10 year [Abm] olds, [B] you and I.
Have you met my new boyfriend, Margaret?
His name is John and he rides my bus to school.
[E] He holds my [B] hand.
[E] [Abm] He's 14.
[B] He's my older man.
[Gb] We'll still be the best of [B] friends, the three of us.
[E]
[B] Margaret, John and I.
Let's go to [E] New York City, [B] Margaret.
We'll hide out in the subways and drink a poet's [Ebm] wine.
Oh, but [E] I have John.
[Abm] See you in [B] tonight.
Stay behind.
I'm crying.
But [Gb] you were home in time for the [E] senior prom.
[B] We lost John.
[Ebm] Fantasies we penned [E] behind the living room now.
[Ebm] All the dreams we [B]
sang [E] when we knew [Abm] how.
Well, [B] they haven't changed.
[Gb] They'll never be two friends [B] just like you and me, Mary Margaret.
[Gb]
[B] Nice to see your [E] family growing, [B] Margaret.
[Abm]
[B] Your daughter and your husband here, they really treat you right.
But we've [E] talked all night.
[B] What about the light?
[Gb] It's no more beyond our walls.
[E] When we were 10, [Abm] you were the [B] rambler then.
[Ebm] Fantasies we penned behind [E] the living room now.
All [Ebm] the dreams we sang [B] when we [E] damn sure knew how.
[B] Never [Dbm] changed.
[B]
[Gb] They'll never be two friends [B] just like [E] you [B] and me, Maggie.
Can't you see?
There's a light beyond these woods, Mary Margaret.
