So this [C] is a song on [Bb] the second half [C] of the record.
[G] And it's actually the last song that I wrote for the album.
I wrote it last New Year's after having had a dream the night before New Year's Eve.
I'm one of those people that [N] go to bed at about 9 o'clock on New Year's Eve
after having proudly put my pajamas on.
[Bb] [C] And [Ab] I had this dream and it was [Ab] very, very simple.
[N] I was in a bar in Baltimore with a friend of mine who I don't see anymore.
But he [Bb] and I came up together in [G] the clubs and bars of [B] Washington, D.C.
He was a great songwriter, [Bb] inventive, very percussive guitarist.
And so there we were in this [G] bar in Baltimore, just kind of huddled in
and talking about old times, telling stories, remembering the people
[Bb] that are no longer with us, that we miss every day, and that we love so much.
And [G] I had this feeling while I was in the dream, you know how it is,
when you're actually, you know, you know you're dreaming and you say to yourself,
I just have to remember this when I wake up.
I have to will myself to remember this because it feels so good.
And what I was thinking about the next day when I was writing things down
was the way that [G] this dream had made me feel, which was [Ab] the desire that we all have
to feel [A] truly known by someone.
[Bb] And that's how my friend made me feel.
[F] And by that I mean, [D]
[F] so good, honor, [C]
treasure.
And it'd been a few years [C] before this
[F] transformation and resolution.
I had to throw that in as [Bb] well.
And at the very [Dm] end, [G] it was done.
And we did.

We are [C] sitting at a [F] table in a bar in Baltimore.
It's the last [D] night of December [G]
and the room [C] is barely full.
[D]
And the front door [F] pulls a draft in [Dm] every time [C] it opens [F] wide.
And you are telling me a story from another [C] [F] time and [Bb] life.
[F]
[Dm] And the waitress [F] brings our order [Dm] and we're tucked in my [F] clothes.
[Bb] And I feel like [Dm] we belong [C] within [F] these ghosts.
[Bb] And I know that [F] I am dreaming [Dm] as I memorize [F] each part.
[Bb] And the telling [Dm] lies are everywhere [C] and the details [F] lie the heart.
[Am] Like the folds of a sun [Bb]-dress that [Am] sand [F] apart my dress.
Like the way you [D] played guitar on the [Bb] box of my ships [F] for business.
[Am]
And take an [Bb] orchard sloth and [Am] it's better [Bb] now to say
[F] I [C] dwell
[Dm] impossibly [C] on [C] New Year's [F] Day.
[Bb] [F]
[Bb] [Am]
[F]
It's [D] a June 5th, we're [F]
fancy [Dm] and we're all hung [F] around.
And [Bb] the night's just getting [Dm]
started or [Bb] the night's just winding [F]
down.
[Dm] The George stories are [F] not clouded yet [Bb] by the ale or [F] by the gin.
They [Bb] just made me [Dm] feel as if I had known [Bb] you all my life.
[F]
[Am] Like the folds of [Bb] a sun-dress that [Am] sand apart [F]
my dress.
Like the way you [Dm] played guitar on the box of my ships for [F] business.
[Am] And what's taken [Bb] which is lost to [Am] me, it's better [Bb] now to say
[F] I dwell [Dm] impossibly [Bb]
on New [F] Year's Day.

[D] The night sky bleached to silver, [F] galaxies to a city's vault.
[Dm] In dreams or in [F] our wake, [Dm] it's just enough to [F]
say
[Bb] Love and grace [Am] and endless flowers, [C] the hours on [F] New Year's Day.
[Am] And the folds of [Bb] sun-dress [Am] that hang us off [F] by the east.
And the way you [D] played guitar on the box of my ships for [F]
business.
