Making a Logic x J. Cole Boom Trap Type Beat chords
Start Jamming...
[A] [F#m] I made [Bm] a video a little [D] while back on Boom Trap production, where I mixed elements of
[Bm] Boom Bap and Trap music.
[F#m] I figured [D] today I'd try to do that [F#m] again, but this time around, we won't be using any music samples.
It's always preferable to be able to make music without relying on samples, due to the
high cost of [D] clearing samples in order to use them [A] legally.
I'm [G] going for a J.
Cole, [A] Logic, or JID type of vibe [D] for this beat.
[B] I won't be quantizing the instruments or percussion elements as much as I [Em] normally would, because
I want that [F#m] slight bit of swing that adds a more human element to [D] the music.
So if you notice some of my MIDI notes [G] being slightly off the grid, [D] that's intentional.
Let's get into the cook up.
[F#m] I pulled up this piano in keyscape, and I'm going to lay down a quick [Em] melody in E minor.
[F#m] [D]
Here's what I came up with.
[Am]
[Em]
[Am]
[C] I added some effects.
[Cm] I added gross beat, some EQ, a bit of delay, and some reverb.
Here's what the piano sounds like now.
[Am]
[Em]
[Am] I opened up these strings in Kontakt, and I laid down this melody.
[A]
I also opened another instance of the strings with a crescendo articulation.
[D] I pulled up these horns in Kontakt, and I laid down another melody.
[Em] [D] [Em] [B]
[F#] [G] I added [Cm] some delay, some reverb, and an EQ.
Here's what the horns sound like with effects added.
[Bm] [E] [D] [E]
[B] [E] [D]
[Em] [D] [E]
[B] [E] [A] [F#m] I added a snare.
I laid down an open hat.
I made this hat pattern.
I added [D] another snare.
I laid down a kick.
And I made this 808 pattern.
Here's what the drums sound like all together.
Alright, I'm going to write a small amount of lyrics here just to see what it sounds
like over the beat.
For the most [A] part, I just wanted to make a cool instrumental with no samples, but I know
a segment of my audience will want [F#m] me to do vocals regardless.
So I'll throw a small snippet in for you [D] guys.
And with all of that out of the way, let's see what we've come up with.
