[D] Today we're going to try to make an emotional Lil Skies, Landing Cube, Young Pinch type beat.
Something with a cool laid back vibe that would be conducive to adding some melodic rap vocals over.
I'll be [F#m] attempting to take some inspiration from Cash Money AP style [Em] production,
since he's produced a lot of tracks [Bm] with this type of vibe.
Cash [F#m] Money AP is a French producer who has produced for many [G] prominent artists,
such [A] as Lil [G] Skies, Landing [F#] Cube, NBA Youngboy, Lil Tecca, and more.
I'll be throwing [A] the beat we make today on my Beatstars [Bm] and Soundcloud page,
for anybody [F#m] who wants to use it.
It'll be free [G] for non-profit use as always.
Let's get into the cook up.
I opened up this piano and [F#m] keyscape,
and I'm going to lay down an emotional melody in the scale of B minor.
[Em] [F#] [F#m]
Here's what I came up with.
[G] [A] [Bm]
[F#m] [G]
[A] [Bm]
[F#m] [G]
[A] [Bm]
[G] I duplicated the chord progression, and I left out the top melodic notes.
I'm going to switch between these two versions of the piano, for the sake of variation.
[A] [Bm] [F#m]
[G]
[A] [Bm] [F#m]
[G]
I opened up this patch from my Omnisphere bank, available on my Beatstars page,
and I laid down this counter melody.
[D]
[N] I made this hat pattern.
I laid down a clap.
I added a rim.
I made this kick pattern.
I laid down an 808.
I'm also going to add in this transition sound to break up the verse and chorus sections of the beat.
Here's what the drums sound like all together.
[D]
Depending on how good your ears are,
you may have noticed that something was off with the tone of the 808.
[A] Distorted sounds have overtones.
Overtones are musical tones, which are part of the harmonic series above the fundamental note.
These are produced by fractional vibrations of an [D] oscillator.
Sometimes there could be a strong overtone which appears at the third harmonic,
[A] which is one octave plus one perfect fifth above the fundamental.
If I play C2 on the 808,
you can see that there's a pretty strong frequency showing up around [D] 196 Hz.
196 Hz is G3.
This can lead [A] to clashing, and give the listener the impression that the 808 is out of tune.
To fix this, I'm [C#m] just applying a notch [F#m] filter around 196 Hz,
and then re-recording the sample into Edison.
We'll use this version of the 808 instead of the original.
Alright, let's see what we've come up with.
