[G]
you know you love that place, that beat, what would I want?
[D] OK, just a quick fix on the open G tuning.
Now we've got the idea of off beats and on
beats and we're going to
4, 1 and G and G and 4.
We're going to use that droning G on the upstroke, on the G string, as a [Ab] device to keep things
going circular [B] while we build up this [F] phrase one note at a time.
So I'm going to start with just one note of the phrase but we're going [G] to loop it.
And the first note [C] is the B string, first fret and I suggest you use the second finger
on your left hand here because what follows [G] is a sliding phrase [Dm] and I play that [G] phrase
with two fingers using my [Dm] second and third finger [C] there.
If you've got fat fingers you may have different ideas [Gm] about using the second finger for this
first note but for the time being [G] let's just say we're using our second finger here [C] and
this note is an off beat note.
There's only one on beat note in the signature lick and
it falls in the second bar so we're looking at the first bar here and they're all off
beat notes but this first note is, theoretically speaking, it's a little bit complicated because
it [G] anticipates the first beat so it's not 1 and 2 and 3 and 4, it's 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1.
So if we keep that going in a circular fashion I'm using my index finger for playing both
the G string here and the B string so I'm swapping between these two strings with my
right hand.
So and 1 and 2.
For those of you with no picking experience you should practice that and maybe try and
get some pace when you get more confident with it.
On the second note is this slide I've mentioned and it's perhaps one of the most difficult
things, certainly to get started with this lick, is because you want to arrive at this
third fret.
We're sliding from the first fret on the B string to the third fret on the B
string and we want to arrive at that third fret at the same time as our thumb's coming
down on the first beat.
So it's and thumb and thumb.
Now as far as the right hand is concerned we're not doing any more than we were doing
just a moment ago.
The right hand is doing the same thing here.
So let's loop that.
And slide and 1 and 2.
[C] Slide and 2 and 3 and 4 [G] and thumb and thumb and 2.
It's a wee bit to get your head round to start with but if you start slowly and aim for a
regular sound and try and build a bit of pace.
OK.
I'm going to keep these lessons to 5 minutes so I think that's enough for [C] beginners.
I think that's plenty enough to [E] practice and we'll look at the second half of the first
bar in the next lesson.
