LESSON #1a. Black Mattie made Easy ~ A Beginner's Guide. Getting your guitar into "Open G" Tuning. chords
Start Jamming...
[Ab]
Well, Black Matty ain't got you, though.
You'll get thrashed.
You'll get downed.
Well, Black Matty ain't got you, though.
[N] Thanks for all your votes.
And as promised, here begins a course of lessons on how to play R.L. Burnside's Poor Black Matty.
And this course of lessons tries to assume no previous knowledge of guitar.
So I'll try and take things one at a time.
The first thing that you should know is I was playing there in Open G tuning, sometimes called Spanish tuning.
So this tune is not played in standard tuning.
So the first thing I'm going to do, this first lesson, is going to focus on tuning.
It's going to focus on how to get from standard tuning into Open G tuning, otherwise called [D] Spanish tuning.
So [Em] for those of you with no experience at all, I'll just run through the standard tuning.
And the first note is E.
[A] The second note is A,
[D]
[G] G, B, E.
Now, although from this point forward we're going to be working in Open G tuning,
it's important to remember the names of the open strings in standard tuning,
because I'm going to refer to the strings as we go along, as if we were in standard tuning.
And amongst other things, in Open G tuning there are three D's, which potentially causes confusion.
So I shall refer to the strings as E, A, D, G, B, E.
And for those of you who are unfamiliar with this, [N] if you remember the phrase,
Elephants and donkeys grow big ears, then you should be able to remember what these strings are called.
We're going to go from standard tuning now into the Open G tuning.
And as I've already said, there are three D's in Open G.
[Em] The first string we're going to change is the bottom E string,
and we're going to change it down the ways, two semitones, to a D.
[C]
And it's worth noting that when we do change from standard to Open G tuning,
and many other Open tunings as well, we always tune down the ways, [Em] not upwards.
So we're going to go downwards to find a D.
And we've already got a D there, [D] the open D string.
So if you use that as a cue, [E]
[Eb] [D]
hopefully you can hear that that's the same note.
They're an octave apart, but they're both D's.
And the same rule applies [Em] to the top E string.
That's an E there, and we're going to go down two semitones to a D.
Again, we can use the D's [D] that we've already got as a cue to key into.
And hopefully you can hear that's also a D.
[G] Having changed those two strings, there's only one more string to change,
and that's the [A] A string.
And that goes down two semitones to a G.
[Am] Now, to give us an idea of what that G sounds like,
if we fret the fifth fret on the first string, [G] the bottom E string,
that gives us the G that we want.
So our A string wants to sound like that.
So [A] we take it down to give us that G.
We're now at open G tuning, and open G tuning is [D] D, G, [G]
D, [D]
G, D.
[F] I'm going to try and keep these lessons to five minutes.
So that's it for the first lesson.
We're just focused on getting you into the open G tuning.
In the next lesson, I'll start to look at the picking.
