Hello, I'm [N] Kimo Hussey, and I just recently returned from a wonderful, wonderful trip.
And I thought what we'd do today is something that we talked about in California.
And that is what some people call a two-finger method of playing the ukulele.
I think some people call it a chord melody.
But what it refers to is a style of ukulele play that involves playing the melody and harmony simultaneously.
And so I want to say, before we begin, that this is not intended to be a lesson in how to play the songs that I'm going to play today.
All I want to focus is just on one single and simple technique.
It's a technique that I use to play in [D] this style, and that is [Am] just bringing the forefinger and the thumb together, like this.
Because in the course of doing this, [C] I generally use my forefinger to get the melody, [F] and my thumb, in a brush-down movement, to get the harmony.
[C] And so what I thought I'd do today is to demonstrate this technique.
Now, in your practice, all you have to do is do this.
[F] And when you do it, [G] play chords, and actually tune those chords, so that you can adjust the blend of the strings [C] to whatever it is you want to hear.
Okay.
[B] Let me first do something in the key of F for you.
And here [D#] comes the melody.
[F] It's Ode to Joy.
[Em]
Here comes the [E] melody first.
[Fm]
[D] [F#] [D] [F]
[G] [F#m]
[F] Concentrate on [D#] that melody all by itself.
You will find that it's not very easy.
Chords-wise, it's easy.
It's F
[C] [A#] [G]
[F] [Am]
[G] then
to [E] F.
[G] Pretty difficult, huh?
[C]
[F]
[C] [F] [G] So all I [E] do in that part is go from F to C7, back to F to C7, back to F.
Two chords.
And so now, if I practice that melody enough to combine it, here's what I have.
[F] [Am]
[C] [F]
[Am] [C]
[F]
[C] [F]
[G] [F]
Okay.
[E] But again, remember the technique.
It's just a pincher movement with the forefinger and the thumb.
Okay.
Let's do something in C.
I thought we would give you an example in F and one in C.
And [C] the song that I picked for C is Beautiful Dreamer.
And so the melody goes
[F#]
[D]
[F#] [E] [F]
[E] [Em]
[F#] [Em]
[D] [C#] [D]
[G] [B]
[Em] [C] That's the melody.
Again, isolate [F#] the melody and practice [C] nothing besides that.
And you'll find that putting together the melody and the harmony will be much easier.
Chords-wise
[Dm]
You [G] [D] [Am]
will find this part of the song just uses C, D minor.
And [F#] then F.
[C]
[Dm]
[G] [Dm]
[D] [C]
[C#m] [Dm] [C]
[Dm] [D]
[C]
Again, I [E] want to emphasize to you that the purpose of this video is not to show you how to play Beautiful Dreamer in C or Ode to Joy in F.
The purpose of this video is to show you one single technique in that.
[C] [D]
[D#] [C]
Have fun.
