[N] Aloha, I'm Kimo Hasi.
Happy Wednesday to you.
I wanted to spend some time today
talking about what some people call a chord melody, some people call it two
finger method.
I've recently heard it referred to as backwards or upside down
strumming, or whatever.
But the gist of it is playing melody and harmony at the
same time.
I want to play just a little bit of what I just played for you in the
opener.
It's a song that I'm going to show you how to play.
And I'm going to
show you how to play this song from the standpoint [E] of chord melody, two finger
style, whatever you want to call it.
Here it comes again.
And as I play this again,
I want you to watch a little bit of my left hand and a little bit of my right
hand and see how simple each of these is individually.
Technique wise with the
right hand, all I'm going to use is the downward movement with my thumb and
that's all.
Here comes a part of it.
[F] [C]
[F] [Am] [C] [F]
[F]
[C] [F] [G]

[N]
I want to tell you that I'm planning to do this song and show you how to
play this song in four installments.
And the reason why I want to do that is to
break it down so that each installment is easy to
understand.
And that is the lesson in doing one of these.
And that is if we
break things down individually into what the left hand needs to do and then what
the right hand needs to do and then combine them first and then combine them
actually at the end, it makes it a lot easier.
Because generally if we
combine the left hand with the right hand too soon, what happens is this guy
here gets very very diffused.
[Bb] And so what I want to start with, or I should say
before I start, I want to tell you that [F] one of the things I would love for you
to do with this song [C] is to learn a lot of it by just looking at and [G] listening,
listening [N] to this video.
Why?
Because I have a feeling that a lot of times if we
if we add more hearing into this process of learning that we can learn faster.
Okay, in order to learn chord melody songs and learn to play them well, we
start with the melody and only the melody.
So what I want to do is tell you
that this song is owed to Joy.
We're going to do it in the key of F.
And all I want to
do in this installment is to show you how to play the melody.
And what I would
love for you to do is just stick to the melody and play only the melody over and
over and over.
And next week we'll add the human chord.
Now I want you to also
know that the objective of this is not [E] necessarily the song.
The objective is
to study the technique.
And so the first thing we're going to do is isolate the
melody and learn just that.
With regard to the right hand, it's going to be a
downward stroke of the thumb only.
So we're in the key of F and it starts with
the open A string.
And here comes the [Am] melody.
[G]
[F] [G]
[Am] [G]
[F]
[G] [G] [N] So let me play that for you again.
Again the right hand is a downward stroke of
the thumb only.
And you will find that if you use this exercise just to
concentrate on learning the melody, it's really not that hard.
Remember, remember
to let your ears listen very carefully also as you practice it.
Here comes the melody again.
[Am] [G]
[F] [G]
[Am]
[F]
[G] [Dm] [N]
And that's all we're going to do today.
So what I'd love for you to do is just
take this one week and learn to play that melody and learn it well.
Because
what we're going to do next time is to put the harmony with it.
Put the chords
and harmony with it.
Because any song that we choose to play is comprised
basically of two big things.
Number one, the melody, and number two, we
