[E] Hey guys, welcome back again to Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, where the proof is in the singing.
We got a lot of requests for this tune.
The song is called Separate Ways, the band is Journey, and obviously the vocalist is Steve Perry.
Now, it's kind of interesting, because this is sort of where Steve started to change his
vocal style from sort of a Sam Cooke, light R&B thing, into a heavier thing.
So we'll do it first, we'll talk about it after, like we always do.
Journey, Separate Ways, let's [Em] rock.

I'm going to be true, [Bm] true,

[C] you.
[C] Feeling like I [D]
[Am] can't change your mind.
[C] If we can't go [D] on, let's [Am] survive the tide.
[Em] Love can buy.
One day, love will find [D] you.
Break those chains and find [C] you.
One night, we'll remind [Am] you.
How it went.
[Bm] [D] [Em] Every voice, it'll be [E] ever [D] true.
True love, won't desert [C] you.
You know I still love [A] you.
Though we're destined, [Bm] we're not [D] separate [Em] ways.

[Em] [C]
[G] You must go.
[D] [Am] Wish you love.
Never [C] walk alone.
[D] [Am] Take care of my love.
[D] [Em] Miss you love.
Someday, love will find [D] you.
Break those chains and find [C] you.
One night, we'll remind [A] you.
How it [B] [D]
[Em] went.
Every voice, it'll be [E] ever true.
[D] True love, won't desert [C]
you.
You know I still love [A] you.
Though we're destined, [B] we're [D] not separate [E] ways.
I [D] still love you girl.
[E] Miss [C] you girl.

I have a singing course.
It's called How to Sing Better Than Anyone Else.
So for all you singers out there, you can click here to check this out.
I cover what I'm about to tell you, all of this stuff in my singing course.
Now Steve was much more of an R&B soul guy.
And he modeled his voice more after guys like Sam Cooke.
So if you listen to Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come, and Google this stuff, check this out.
And then you listen to Journey's Love and Touch and [N] Squeeze In, you're going to see some, and hear some very, very similar attributes to the voice.
Why is this important?
Well, Steve was much more of an R&B guy, and then he tried to lean into a sound that I truly believe he didn't have the support mechanism to sustain it.
Now, and he wound up kind of losing his voice later on.
Now, he's Steve Perry.
I'm not dissing Steve Perry.
One of the greatest rock vocalists that's ever lived.
I'm just Ken Tamplin.
But I'm trying to explain some stuff to you guys.
So if you really listen, catch what I'm talking about, because I just did this tune, and you can see the difference.
Now, what I do is I train a runner's body.
I don't get a weightlifter's body with this, you know, big top-heavy thing, and I'm not looking for the old runner's bodies in the 70's,
or the guys so skinny and gaunt they can hardly move, right?
I'm looking for that cut buff guy that you can put him in any style.
I don't care where it is.
Rock, pop, R&B, country, jazz, you name it.
And this guy can perform.
In this case, Steve stepped into a sound where if he were to try to sustain that kind of sound for a long period of time, he'd have a tough time.
But if you went,
HAAAAA, YAY, YAY, YAY, YAY, YAY,
Kind of a grooving, you know, gentle R&B sound, he could reside in that, in that altitude all day long.
But the minute you kind of lean into that sound,
you're kind of in trouble because you have to have enough strength to sustain the sound.
So I cover all of this stuff in my singing course, guys, how you build the stamina and the strength to do the R&B
side of it first, and then if you want to continue your strength training and step into [G] heavier stuff,
like what Steve was doing here, you can actually strength train up into that.
Okay?
Hope you guys enjoyed this.
Thank you so much for joining me.
