[E] [D] [E]
[C] [G] [D] [A]
[E] [A] Yeah, [Em] [E] I'm a little bit old
[C] [F] [G] [C] [D] [G] [A]
[D] [E] [B] Hey guys, Guitar Pilgrim here and [C] today is a good day
because we're gonna play the iconic solo of Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix
and it's quite interesting because the song was actually recorded as early as 1966
and when you listen to Jimi's playing and his technique and everything
and you compare that to what other guitarists were doing at the time
you can only conclude that the man was really [Em] light years ahead of its time
So let's take a look at the solo
Here is the first lick
[G]
So he starts off with this first note on the B string
15 to the 17th fret, a bend with vibrato
[G#m] But the thing is, Jimi Hendrix puts all his heart and soul into this first note of the solo
You can really hear the intensity
[E] So [C]
[G] [C] right from the start, from the very first note
he plays with such conviction and intensity that it just grabs the listener by the throat
If you want to be able to do that, you're not gonna get there with just technique
[Em]
That was a good note, correct vibrato, good intonation
but it didn't sound like Jimi Hendrix
So how do you sound like Jimi?
Well, my suggestion is to play as if there's no
[F]
[G] Hear the difference?
Same note, same technique, totally different feel
Now, if you practice this note
I remember in the beginning I used to have this problem
[D#] [D] That sounds terrible
[E] So [D#]
what's the problem here?
Well, your fingers need to go to the 15th fret of course
and they need to stay there with the correct [F] intonation
while you do the vibrato and it [E] shouldn't drop
Now if you have that problem at home, you want to just check a few things
First of all, make sure you're not only using your ring finger
You need all three fingers, index, middle and ring finger
Because you need all the strength you have
And [C#m] also, check if your thumb is sticking up
If your thumb is sticking up, it's [E] gonna be way too hard
You need a good tight grip
And lastly, you want to make sure that [G] you're only actually bending one string
The B string
Only one string should be actually underneath your fingertips
If it's more than one, way too hard Let's continue
That [Am] [Em]
last one is so good
[A] [E] So again, he starts with a bend
And remember the intensity, right?
Makes all the difference
[Bm]
[B] [E] Two notes together
It's kind of a Chuck Berry type of [Bm] thing
Bit [Am] of vibrato [Em] on that root note
And of [B] course
[G] [Am] That beautiful last lick
Now in that last lick, it would have been a hell of a lot easier
if Jimmy would play something [A#] like this
[Em] But instead, it's not just one note with the vibrato
It's the G and the B string
Are you only playing the vibrato on the G string?
But you should hear that other string as well
And this
If you're not used to it, [G] can hurt a little bit Let's stop
[A] [G]
So [Fm] this time we've got the bend twice
He just can't get enough of [E] this
[F#] And basically he keeps playing that E minor pentatonic scale
Which we've heard about 10,000 times before
But [Em] when Jimmy is playing it, it somehow sounds fresh and very interesting
[G] And [A] [G]
[Em] then of course a truly Hendrix classic lick
[Gm]
[B] He used to play that quite often
And again, if you're going to play this lick, you have to go all out
Otherwise, don't play it at [G] all
[E] And then of course the most famous lick
Beautifully done and not too [C] difficult at all
[F] [G] [B] [C#] [F#] [G#]
[A] [D] [E] And of [A#] course you can play
[G] [E] Isn't it great to play Jimmy Hendrix?
It just doesn't get any better than this, does it?
Hey Joe, beautiful
