The co-founder of Jefferson Airplane, Marty Balin, has died.
He was 76.
I'm John Bodin from Rock History Music.
[F#m]
[E] He played a major role in that San Francisco band Sound in the [G] 60s.
And also in the follow-up band from Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, [D] singing lead vocals on their big hit Miracles from [A]
1975.
Balin [Em] was a chief songwriter on Jefferson Airplane's debut album Takes Off from [G] 1966.
That was the one that featured their [A] original female lead [D] singer, Signee Anderson.
[A] Balin wrote or co-wrote five tunes from their breakthrough album [C] Surrealistic Pillow from 1967.
[G] It's regarded [A] as one of the top albums [C] from that year, featuring Somebody to Love [G] and White Rabbit.
[A] Balin sang lead on three songs [C] from the album and co-lead on three others with the [Bm] new lead singer for the [D] band at the time, Grace Slick.
[A] In the early 60s, Balin was one of thousands [D] of starving musicians in the Bay Area in San Francisco.
[E] That all changed [G] when he met Paul [A] Kantner.
The two would build a monster band.
[G] They'd go on to play the Monterey Pop Festival in [Bm] 1967, [A] Altamont, which had all that trouble with [B] the Hells Angels, [G] and Woodstock in [D] 1969.
Jefferson [F#m] Airplane was a force in [G] the 60s, but a major [D] force in 1967 [A] when that sophomore album came out.
During the Summer of Love, Somebody to Love and White Rabbit [G] were mainstays on the radio that summer.
The band [D] was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
[C#m] Interestingly, [A] their offshoot band, Jefferson [Em] Starship, had more pop hits on the top 40 charts [G] than Jefferson Airplane.
But let's remember, [A] the airplane had a lot more influence in the history of rock and roll.
Balin released about a [Em] dozen albums and had two big solo hits, Hearts [G] and Atlanta Lady [D] in 1981.
The former peaked at number eight.
The singer underwent open-heart surgery in 2016 but sued the hospital, [C] Mount Sinai in New York, [G] claiming he had numerous [E] injuries [A] following the surgery.
Balin died [C] yesterday.
His wife Susan was by his side.
[Em] No cause of death [A] was released.
May he rest in [C] peace.
