Ladies and gentlemen, Jackson Brown.
It's a great pleasure to be here tonight to celebrate Woody Guthrie's 100th anniversary.
[G] This is my good friend Rob Wasserman.
You've seen him come on and off the stage all night.
And he's a collaborator on this song.
He brought this lyric to me from the Guthrie family and we set it to music.
At the time they [D] told me it was a [G] song that hadn't been put to music yet.
Later it turned out that it was a letter.
So we worked on this for a while.
I guess the idea was I was going to trim it down and get it down to song length.
But it's so [C] autobiographical.
[G] It turned out to be about 15 [Em] minutes long.
[G] [D] [C]
[E] [G] We [Em] cut it down.
We tried cutting it down every which way.
[G] We finally got it down.
We played it on TV the other night.
We played [C] it.
It was about four minutes long.
[G] This is a song about [Em] the night he [G] met his wife Marjorie.
It's called You Know the [C] Night.
You
[G] [C]
[G] [C]
[G] know the night I met you
My eyes have [Em] been looking for you
All [G] over everywhere
[Em] Over low road [G] Down highway
[C] Bald [G] deserts
You know [C] the night
You know the night
[G] You know the night
You know [C] the night
Your eyes have the same shine about them
I know that when [Em] I first looked through the wild [G] waywardness
[D] I felt such [Em] a warm and cool [G] sunny smile
That I wanted [C] to look at your eyes for all time
[G] I just felt [C] like you feel like you feel
When you feel [G] like the angels are curling your hair
And you feel like the [C] devil is scratching your heel
[D] [G] I just felt like [C] you feel like you feel
When the angels are curling [G] your hair
And you feel like the devil is scratching [C] your heel
[G] [C] [G]
[C] [G]
Did you feel [C] this way too when I met you
[G] You know [C] the night
You know the night
I [G] first met you
You know the night
Did you look at [C] me and think
Here's this guy that hopes [G] like I hope
And sees [C] the same kind of dreams I [G] see
[C] Cause you wondered I know
[G] If your hopes could find a shade
For [C] the words that we used to walk back [G] before
Your [C] hopes and your plans for the good of the people
[D] Cause [G] all of your hundred and [C] one dreams
Just as bright as the [G] sun
And all of your wants and your hottest [C] desires
Find shape in the flow of [G] my tongue
You [C] know the night
You know the night
[G] I first met you
You know the night
[C] You know the [Gm] night
[G] You know the night
You know the night I met you
My eyes [Em] have been looking for you
All [G] over everywhere
[Em] Over the road

And I [C] felt like you feel when you feel
That the angels are [G] curling your hair
And you feel like the devil [C] is scratching your heel
You [G] know
I just [C] felt like you feel when you feel
Like the angels are [G] curling your hair
And the devil is [C] scratching your heel
[G] [C] You know the night
You know the night
[G] You know the night
You know the [C] night
You know the night
You know [G] the night I met you
You know [C] the night
