Hello, [N] my name is Thomas Thurman and I'd like to teach you how to play Whipping Post by
the Allman Brothers.
Now this isn't exactly a step-by-step instructional video.
If you need further help than what I can give you, consult the tabs.
You can ask me questions below or like me on Facebook here and send me comments, messages,
private messages, whatever you want to.
[D]
My guitar is tuned a whole step down.
That's just for my voice.
You can play it a whole step up or regular tuning or half step down, wherever you want
to play it.
[Gm]
So when you see me play an A minor, it's not exactly an A minor.
It would be a whole step down from that, which would be a G minor on a standard guitar.
Is that right?
Yeah, I think that's right.
So it's basically the A minor shape here at the [G] A minor stage.
Up one, you still play the bass note as A.
[C] [G] You just [Gm] go up two frets.
[C]
[D] And then you go up one more fret and make the A chord.
[G] The A chord is with that pinky down.
You just slide that up to [Gm] the fifth fret.
You slide back down [G] to the A minor chord on [C] the fourth fret.
[Gm]
[D] [Bb] [D]
[B] Okay, and then the chorus [Gb] [Db] goes to [C] a D7, which I'm blocking this E string so it doesn't ring,
so the bass note's a D.
And then you slide up two frets [D] and go to an E7, which I play
the bass note here, so it's a lot deeper.
And that's the lead up to the chorus, and then it goes into the [Gm] A minor, to [C] the D.
C5,
I think is [Bb] what it is.

[Gm] Hopefully that sheds some [G] insight on [F] how to play that song acoustically.
This isn't really the exact way to play it.
The Allman Brothers Band is a huge band with many pieces that, you know, if [C] you're only
one person, you can't do every part.
You know, there's guitar solos in there that I can't do on an acoustic.
Maybe you can, I don't know.
But the intro [G] starts out like this, and then the rest of the song follows.
