Hi, my name is John Morgan, and when we want to play music with other people and have fun,
one of the things we want to do is to be able to be part of a conversation, [Ab] part of a musical conversation.
Part of that is listening, part of that is communicating.
So what I'd like to do is just give you a little bit of [G] vocabulary, musical vocabulary.
One of the basic things in rock music and rock and roll and country and a few other
styles is kind of what [Eb] we might call a shuffle, and it's a feel like [E] this.
So you hear that there are eighth notes, but [Eb] they're uneven.
We're not going, [E] and two and three and four.
We're going, [A]
so that's why it's called a shuffle.
A little bit uneven, [A] just shuffling down the room.
So for a couple songs here, I'd like to show you something.
We're going to use A, but it's not an [E] A chord, it's a power chord.
So it's only got two notes to it.
It's got the open A [Eb] string and the second fret of the D string.
[A] Let's do that together for a minute.
See how it shuffles along?
Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba [E] ba ba.
[Eb] Now for D, [Ab] we're going to come over and play the open [D] D string and the second fret of the G string.
That's going to function like a D chord.
It's only two notes, so it's not really a chord.
We'll go back to the A.
[E]
Now for an E, we'll go over here to the open E string, your lowest string, and the second fret of the A string.
So [Eb] let's just do Sweet Home Chicago, a Robert Johnson song, pretty standard blues jam.
And let's just do it with those two notes.
Oh come on,
[A] baby don't you want to [E] go
Oh come [D] on, baby don't you want to [A] go
To that [E] same old place
[D] Sweet home [A] Chicago
[Eb] Okay, so we have a little three [B] chord song there.
A, D, and E.
You can kind of follow, and hopefully the melody was leading you through that.
But how can we spice it up and make it sound a little more [Eb] like rock and roll?
All we're going to do, our first finger [A] is still going to be here.
[A] And then we'll use our third finger on the fourth fret.
[Eb] And I get it going a little bit like [A] this.
Oh come on, [D] baby don't you [A] want to go
[D] Oh come on, baby don't you want to [A] go
To that [E] same old place
[A] Sweet home Chicago
The song [Eb] proceeds along like that.
Now we can do one more little thing, there's tons of stuff, variations.
But let's try this.
So I do third
[Eb] fret of the E string.
[A]
Oh come on, [D] baby don't you want to go
[A]
Oh come on, baby don't you want to go
To that [E] same old place
[D] Sweet [A] home Chicago
Well, one and one is two
Two and two is four
I'm heavy loaded, baby
Heading out the door [D] crying
And hey, hey, baby don't you want [A] to go
[E] [A] To that [E] same old place
[D] Sweet [A] home Chicago
So [E] [A]
there's a little bit for [Eb] your vocabulary for a blues jam.
