Alright guys, here's something new I'm going to be doing.
It's called a lunch break [A] lesson.
When I'm teaching [A] guitar, I teach tons and tons of songs [E] each day.
And I [D] thought I'd share some of my favorite [A] songs that I've gotten to learn [E] with students that maybe I [B] always wanted to learn or just had forgotten.
So, the first one I'm going to show you, I can't play the actual song because of copyright reasons with the partnership and everything.
But, it is the Summer of 69 by Brian Adams.
It's always been one of my favorite songs.
I never [D] knew how to play it.
And I just recently had to [A] learn it with a couple people.
So, it's real easy and it's just a fun song to jam to.
[A] Okay, so let's go ahead and learn it.
I'm [E] just going to, you know, show you this song.
It's real easy to [D] play.
And no solo to it, just [Bb] the chords and everything.
So, it starts [A] off with a Dsus2 chord.
If you don't know what that is, it's a D major chord.
Boom!
Without the middle [E] finger.
Okay, so we're doing a Dsus2 [D] here.
So, you're going to play that chord and then palm mute the D string twice, open.
Play the chord again.
Palm mute the D string 12 times.
Okay, you do that twice.
[A] Go to an A chord.
[D] Okay, so on the A, same exact [A] pattern.
You're going to play the A chord.
[D] Palm mute the A string, open twice.
[A] A chord again.
A string, palm muted 12 times.
Okay, and you do that twice.
So then, whenever the verse kicks in, I'm going to show you that the verse, the drums kick in.
Then [D] there's one guitar just going, strumming out the Dsus2.
And the other guitar, [A] while the other one's strumming out these chords, [D] is going, still playing that.
[A]
So that's [B] the verse.
And pretty much the chorus, to be honest.
But instead of showing you that for the chorus, I'm going to show you the keyboard [F] part.
So anyway, so after that, then you go to the pre-chorus, which starts with a B5 power chord.
Which is the second [B] fret on the A string [B] with your index [F] finger, and then fourth fret on the D [B] string.
So it's like, standing on [Gb] your mama's [B] porch.
Excuse my singing.
[A] Then you go to A.
Then you go to a [D] Dsus2.
To a [G] G chord.
If you don't know any of [A] these chords, I'll have the tabs, I'll have the short
Ugh, I can't talk.
The chords and tabs in the video.
Bada-bee.
[B] So again, B, A, [D] Dsus2, [G] G.
Then you go back to [B] the B.
Then you hit the A chord.
[A] Then [A] you're [D] on to the chord.
Then you go to the chorus.
And behind it is this keyboard part, which [B] I think is way cooler than what the guitar is actually doing.
The [B] keyboard is [D]
[A] going
Okay, and all we're doing is we're going back to the Dsus2.
[A] And you're just going to pick the high E string, B, G, and [B] then D.
Oh, I'm sorry, just the high E, B, and G.
Okay, then you go into a D major, which is with your middle finger down on the second fret, high E.
[D] Then you go into a Dsus4, which is D chord, still shape, but [Bb] now you're putting your pinky on the third fret, high E.
And picking those same [F] three strings, [D] [D]
so
Then you [C] go back to your normal D major.
Now this part's a little bit different.
Now you're going to pick your high E [B] string.
This is now open, so we're going to a Dsus2, high E, then G.
[A]
And put your middle finger back down for a D major, high E, and G.
[D]
Okay, so that part
[A] [D]
[E] Now we're going to go to an Asus2 chord.
We're [A] going to go
So, [Gb] you know what Asus2, it's just like your normal A major, which is [B] this, but without your ring finger.
So now the G, I'm sorry, the B is now [A] open.
[E] Okay, [F] so this one, we're going to pick the B string, the G, and then the [Gb] D.
[A]
Now put your ring finger back down for an A major.
Now we're going to play an Asus4, so [D] take your pinky and put it third fret on the B string.
[A]
Lift the [A] pinky back up.
Go back to that A major.
And now kind of the same thing that we did before, we're going to lift your, um, what, the ring finger up?
And now we're at Asus2, and you're going to pick the [E] B string and then the D.
Put your ring [Am] finger back down for A major.
[A] And then do the D, [Gb] so
[A]
And that's kind of that whole part.
[D] [A]
[Gb]
[A] So that's like the majority of the [D] song, so
So you've got all those riffs, and the only other part is that bridge.
[A]
Where it's like, we'll be young [N] and restless when we're dead.
I don't remember the words.
We need a head to a mind.
Yeah, so it [F] goes
[Bb]
[C] [Bb]
[F] So you're doing a power chord, first fret on your low E string.
This is an F.
[E] Move down a string each finger to the first fret on the A.
We're doing [Bb] an A sharp.
Then you go up to [A] the third fret on the A string, still rocking a power chord.
This is a [C] C5.
Then you go [F] back to that A [Bb] sharp.
[F] [Bb]
[C] [Bb]
[F] [Bb] [C]
[A]
Then they're back to [D] strumming that chord out, and the key word of the background is demo.
[A]
[B] I'm going to play it a lot cleaner.
And then it's going back to the other part again.
[D]
[A] And that's pretty much the song.
There's a little bit of a solo that I actually don't even know how to play.
At the end of the song, I kind of just [A] jam over something in D major.
[B]
[E] [B]
[B] That is [Bb] how you play The Summer of [A] 69 by Bryan [E] Adams.
