How to Play Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana on Guitar chords
Start Jamming...
Hey what's up guys it's Jen [G] here to teach you some guitar.
We're gonna work
[N] on Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Ah the birth of grunge, Nirvana.
We love it.
So the big
thing with this grunge music and Nirvana is power chords.
[F] One, [N] five, eight.
[F] That's
all you need.
These three notes.
[Bb] And you can move it [Ab] all around [F] and it sounds
[Bb] great.
And you can do it on the [C] fifth string [Dm] as well.
[Bb] And we love it [Fm] because
the first rule of being a guitar player [N] is you have to be lazy.
So [F] that's what
we're gonna do.
We're gonna be lazy.
[Bb] We're gonna take this shape and [Ab] move it all
[Db] over the place on the neck.
[E] The [Bm] key thing [G] with these power chords is to keep the
stretch happening.
It's [Fm] very easy to move it up [Ab] and then these get squashed
together and you get that [G] beautiful [Abm] sound instead of that.
[Fm] So make sure when
you're practicing [Ab] it you're maintaining that stretch in between.
[F] So [E] let's get
started.
[F] F power chord or F5.
You can call it either name.
[C] [Bb]
B flat.
So we just move
the position down one string [F] set.
So we're from the sixth string [Bb] now on the fifth
string.
[Abm] Going back to the sixth string for A flat [Db] and now we're here [Eb] for D
flat.
[Abm] Okay.
[F] So [Bb] same [Abm] shape over [Db] and over.
But it sounds [Ab] so good.
So [F] we like it.
Okay.
The [G] key thing with this is the rhythm of it.
It's [E] very very specific.
The chords
may not be that difficult but you want to get the rhythm.
You want to get the
feel [F] of it.
You can't just [Bb] go because [Ab] [Dbm] [N] that doesn't really sound like it.
Your
friends will make fun of you and you'll probably quit guitar.
Not that I have
any experience with that.
[F]
[Bb] [Eb] Okay.
So here's [Fm] the rhythm.
[Bb] [Ab] [Db] [Fm]
[Bb] [Ab]
[Db] I'm doing [C] these little
scratches in between.
[Fm] Maybe a little advanced.
[Bb]
[Ab] [Db]
[Fm] That's nice and slow.
[Bb] [Ab] [Dbm]
Okay.
[Ab] Let's
play it in context again.
[Gm] Two, three, [F] four.
[Bb] [Ab]
[Db] [Fm] F, [Bb] [Ab] E flat, A [Db] flat, [F] D flat.
[Bb]
[Ab] [Db] [Fm]
[Bb] [Ab] [Db] Take it nice [F] and
[Bb] [E] [Ab]
[Db] [F]
[Bb] [Ab] [Db]
slow.
[Bm] Okay.
So that's your verse and your chorus right there.
Pre-chorus.
[Fm] No, I'm
sorry.
Here's your verse.
That's your intro and your chorus.
Verse, [Eb]
[C] you're going to
borrow your finger over the [Fm] C note and the F note right here.
Or you can do that if
you want to because guitar [Eb] players are lazy.
[F] I like doing this.
So C and F and
that's all it is.
Two, three, four, one.
Four, one, two, three, four, one.
Four, one, two, three, four, one.
Four, one, two, three, [C] four.
Okay.
Now we've got [E] the pre-chorus.
[Cm] It's the exact same notes.
You just play them a little bit [Fm] faster.
Ah, that sounds
nice.
Sounds much better with a full band but you just keep playing it because it's
pretty.
So just C and F.
[N] And then we're to the chorus which we've already gone [F] over.
[Bb] [Ab] [Db]
[F] [Bb] [Ab] [Db]
[Ab] Okay.
So now we're going into the re-intro and the re-intro is a little bit tricky.
It's a little bit fast.
Sounds much better on [F] electric because you have the
distortion [C] but we will make it work.
[F] So we have F.
We're going to slide up a [Gb] half
step to F sharp [G]
and then we're going to bend [Bb] this note.
We're on the third fret,
third string.
It's actually B flat note.
[E] [Bb] Yeah, [G] that sounds good.
So nice [F] and slow.
F, [Gb]
[Bb] F sharp, [G] bend.
[F] That's where he says, [Fm] hey.
[Gb] [Gm] [N] Okay.
That's the first part of [Fm] it.
F, [Gb] F [Eb] sharp, [Fm] bend.
F, [Bb] B flat.
We're on the [Ab] sixth fret and then we go to the fourth fret which is A flat.
All on the sixth string.
[Fm] F, [Gb] [F] F sharp, bend.
F, [Bb]
[Ab] B flat, [Fm] A flat.
F, [Gb] [Eb] F sharp, bend.
[F] F, [Bb] A flat.
Ah, B [Ab] flat, A flat.
[N] Okay, let's do that one more time.
[F] F, [Gb]
F sharp, [Fm] bend.
F, [Bb] B [Ab] flat, A [F] flat.
F, [Gb] F sharp, [F] bend.
F, [Bb] [Ab] B flat, A flat.
Okay, [N] so let's kind of play everything in context but just a little bit slower
because the parts are kind of discombobulated especially it's difficult
without a full band to just play this song on acoustic.
Some translate really
well and some don't and this is kind of in between where you can really play the
chorus strong on acoustic but then you get to the verse and it's kind of
empty.
So let's just play it a little bit in context a little bit slower.
So [F] intro.
[Bb] [Ab]
[Dbm] [F] [Bb]
[Abm] Okay, [Db] we're moving on to the verse.
[F]
Four, one, two, three, four, two, three, four.
Now pre-chorus.
Going into chorus.
One, two, three, four.
[Bb] [Ab] [Db]
[F] [Bb] [Ab]
[Dbm] [F] [Bb]
[Ab] [Dbm] [F]
Okay, [Bb] now get ready [Ab] for that re-intro.
[Db]
It's a little [F] weird.
[Gb] [Gm] [F]
[Bb] [Ab] [F] [Gb]
[Gm] [F] [Bb] [Ab] [E] [F]
Okay, so that's [N] it.
Get an electric and crank up the distortion and get a lot of
anger and angst and I think you'll be able to play this song quite well.
So
that's it.
That's it for this video and if you want to check out some more

Thanks guys.
