[E] Hi everybody and welcome to this week's lesson of what I'd say by Ray Charles
a classic very good exercise for your left hand and also a very good example
of how to use patterns on three simple blues chords.
Okay so let's take a look at the end result first.
[A] [Em]
[E]
[B]
[A] [E]
[Em] Okay [E] so it's a blues E A B here.
Let's take a look at the left hand first.
An E, [B] a B, [D] a D [E] and an E.
[B] [D]
[E]
[B] [D] [E]
[B] [D]
[E] [B]
[D] [E] Then [A] to the A E [Em] G [A] A and [E]
[G] [A] back to E [E]
[B] B [D] D.
[E]
[B]
[D] You play that two [B] times and then go to a B.
So the five and [A] then to an F sharp and [B] A and a B.
[Em] An A E G [A]
A.
[E] These [D] are all played [E] once [Bm] and then you start over [E] again.
Okay so this left hand is also the intro to the song.
It just starts with this [Bm]
[E] [Bm] [E] bass [Bm] line [E] [Bm] [A] all the way [Em] [A] up to A [Em] [A] back to [Em] E [Bm] [E] [Bm] and [E] to [B] B [F#m] to [A] A to [E] E.
[Bm] [E] [B]
And then [E] the right hand comes in.
[D] [E] Okay let's focus on that one.
This is pretty difficult to play.
It's an E inverted like this and like this.
So that's an E chord.
I use thumb, middle finger, pinky.
[Bm] [E] And then that's the pattern.
So play the whole [B] chord, a B, [D] a D.
So that's a seven.
You see?
[E] It's actually these notes we're using.
Whole [Bm] chord, B, D [E] and then the whole chord again there.
In combination with the left hand this is pretty difficult.
But pay close [B] attention.
[E] [B]
[Bm] [E] That's it.
[Bm] [E]
[G#] [E] Slowly.
[B] [D] [E]
[Bm] [E] Oh sorry.
That's it.
[Bm] [E]
[D] [E]
[Bm] Again.
[E] Pay [B] attention to where [D] that note [E] is timed.
There the low E.
[Bm]
[E] [B] [D]
[E]
[Bm] [E]
[Bm] [E]
[D] Slowly again.
[E] Oh sorry.
[Bm] [E]
[Bm] [E]
The whole thing.
Up to speed.
[A]
Then to the A.
[C#]
B, C sharp, E, G.
This [A] is a regular A chord.
Then we add [G] the seventh on top and the nine [Em] here.
And then [A] leave out the A because that's [Em] already played in the left [A] hand.
Pattern is actually quite the same but [Em] now with these notes.
[A] [Em] Together.
[A]
Right, left.
You see?
It's actually timing [Em] wise it's the same thing.
[A]
[Em]
[A] [Em] [A]
[E] [Bm] [E] Back to E.
Same thing.
Then to [B] the B.
[D#]
[B] Let me first show you what chord here is.
It's a B [D#] and then a seven is on top.
[B]
[D#] [B]
So again the same pattern.
[F#m] Together, [B] right, left.
[D] And then that lick comes like this.
A flam note.
I use [B] my index and middle finger.
[G] [E] A, B flat, [B] B, [E] D, E.
And then down.
[B] Here I'll show you again how this comes from that B.
[Dm]
[B] Oh sorry.
[A]
[Am] [D] [E]
And then you land on the E.
[B] Let me play it all [E] slowly.
One more time.
This would be an option if you find it too difficult here to play the whole chord.
You could also just take the bottom two here on this [Bm] E.
[E] Just to practice those.
[Bm] [E]
You could start with this.
[A] [C#] [A] Here [C#] it doesn't work.
[A] You have [C#] to
[E]
[Bm] [E] [B]
[A] [E]
So that's it.
As you see it's quite challenging to play the right hand and the left hand together.
I know that's difficult.
It's just a matter of practice, practice, practice.
First make sure you know the left hand and can play it with your eyes closed
while thinking about something completely different.
That has to go almost like an automatic thing.
And then add the right hand.
Don't forget to first play it very, very slowly and increase with very small steps to a higher tempo.
Until you reach the regular tempo.

[B] [D]

[B] [D] [E]
[B] [D]

[Bm] [E] [B]
And then [E] the right hand comes in.
[D] [E] Okay let's focus on that one.

[Bm] [E]
[D] [E]
[Bm] Again.
[E] Pay [B] attention to where [D] that note [E] is timed.
