How To Play John Prine Hello In There (intro only) chords
Start Jamming...
We've got the capo on fret 5 for hello in there and we're going to play chord shapes
in the key of G and it's John Prine's favourite Travis Pitt style of accompaniment and I'm
going to say again, as always with John Prine, that you don't need to feel that you must
follow the exact notes that he's playing.
Set up the regular bass and you'll find that
really anything you play with your fingers will sound good.
There are three sections to the song.
We need to learn the introduction, the verse [Eb] and the
chorus and then you've got the whole song.
Let's start with the introduction.
The first
two bars that you see on your tab, which then repeat, so it's the first four bars, [C] sound
like this.
[Dm] [G] And [C] repeat.
[G] [Dm]
[G] [E] So we've got a G [C] chord where we're playing 6 2 4 3 6 2 4 3 to an
A minor [Dm] chord 5 2 4 1 5 2 4 1.
[Eb] It's a slow four beats to the bar but with a [B] lot of activity
in each beat.
1 e and a 2 e and a [Dm] 3 e and a 4 e and a [Cm] to a standard D7 chord where [G] he's
going to play 4 2 3 1 4 2 [Dm] 3 1 but open and [G] then 4 [Dm] 2 3 1 back at the [G] second fret.
4 2
[Dm] 3 and anything you like.
[B] It's probably the second string [Eb] open because you'll be moving
back to the G chord again.
It's the same rhythm as the [G] previous bar.
[C] [Eb]
Then you repeat those
two bars.
The [D] next bar written on your tab is bar 3.
B minor over D.
Now he's playing
this B minor chord normally would be like that but he's playing it as a three finger
chord.
Second fret, third fret, fourth fret [G] and using the open D [Abm] as the bass note and
playing.
[Em]
So it's 4 2 3 1 4 2 3 [C] 1 open 4 [Em] 2 3 1 back at the second fret 4 2 3 [Eb] and again
2 probably open as you're moving into the next chord.
Bar [E] 4 it's a C chord.
[F]
[Am] [Eb] John Prine
likes to do this type of hammer-on [Eb] a lot.
He hammers the bass note on [Cm] this C chord open
to third fret.
[F] I tend to find I'm hammering into the whole chord.
And then 3, the bass
[Fm] on this Travis Bitt goes 5 3 5 3 on a [Cm] C chord.
So [Bm] hammer [F] 3 1 5 2 3 pinch [Eb] 5 and 1 and again
hammer 5, 5 and 2 and hammer 5.
[F] 3 1 5 2 3 and [C] again probably 2 open as you move to the
next chord.
[D] So 1 [F] e and a 2 e and 3 e and a 4 e [Am] and a.
[Eb] The G chord in the next bar,
bar [Cm] 5,
[Eb] he's going to play the 6th string but again he'll hammer into that bass note on
the third fret.
[C] 4 2 6 3 4 pinch 6 and 3 4 2 6 3 4 2.
[Eb] [C] 1 e and a 2 e and 3 e and a 4 e
and a.
Once [Am] again though I'm going to say [Db] a standard pattern would work just as well
if you don't want to worry about the difference in the pattern at that point.
[B]
Now we want
D over F sharp, a D chord plus the thumb hooked over on the second fret of the 6th
string.
[G]
It's [Bm] 6 3 [G] 4 pinch 6 and 3 4 [Cm] 6 and 3 hammered, hammering the third.
[G] 4 2 6 3 4.
1 e and 2 and 3 e and a 4 e and.
And [B] that's the last chord before the G chord that starts
the [Eb] verse.
So let's play the whole of that introduction [C] again.
[Dm]
[G] [C]
[Dm] [G]
[Em]
[F] [C]
[G]
