[Bb] Hey there, this is Eric from PianoLessonsMadeSimple.com and this tutorial is going to be for the song
Rascal Flatts' Bless the Broken Road.
This song is in the key of C, so it has no sharps and flats.
It's going to be made up of all white notes, so it's going to make it a little easier when
you're playing it, but it's still a difficult song to play.
But once you catch on to how it is, it won't be that hard.
The majority of the song is just made up of the intro, so if you can learn the intro,
you'll be able to play the majority of the song.
Let's go ahead and get started.
The intro is going to be played throughout the majority of the song, so if you can learn
the intro, you've got the song.
Let's look at the right hand on the intro.
It starts [C] on a C major chord, but instead of playing that full 1-3-5, [Bb] let's take out
the middle note, the E, [C] and just play the C and the G with your [Fm] pinky and your thumb.
[Bb] Now you're going to [C] strike those two notes together, and then you're going to come down
on the [Bb] D with your index finger, and then [Fm] down to the C.
[C] All that is is
[Fm] Okay, that's easy.
[Bb] Nothing to it.
So you're going to play that two different times in a row.
It's going to sound a little something [C] like this.
[Fm] [G] Easy enough.
[Bb] Once you've played that two times in a row, you're going to come down [G] to a G chord.
Alright, and you can play the full G chord if you want, if it makes it easier, [Bb] but if
you [G] want to, you can just play the G and the A together, because you're going to be doing
a [Bb] little bit more movement after you play that G chord.
So [G] you can play the G and the A together, and then you're going to walk up with your
ring finger [Fm] onto the C, [D] and then up to the D.
[Bb] So it's going to sound a little something [Em] like this.
[C] [Bb] Alright, once you've played that, you're going to move up to an [Am] A minor chord.
Alright, [Em] and you can play the full A minor [Am] chord there, or you can just play the [F] two,
the A and the C, however you like to do it.
[Bb] So it's going to look a [G] little something like this.
[F]
Alright, and then after you play [Bb] that, you're going to go up with your ring finger and your
pinky again on the D [E] and the E.
So it's going to look a little something [G] like this.
[Am]
[E] Now, you're [Bb] going to go play the [F] F chord, which this is an inverted F, [A] so you play the
[F] A, C, and F.
You'll play that twice.
[C] Down to the C chord, which is an inverted C, which is the G, C, and E.
[Bb] So it'll look [F] like this.
[C] [Em] [Bb] Then down to the other [C] inverted C, which is made up of the C, [Em] G, or the E, [C] G, and C.
Alright, let's look at that [Bb] at full speed and watch how it's played.
[C] [G] [Am]
[F] [C] [Bb] Now, the second part of the intro is a little different.
It's built around the same type of chords, but I like to play it a different way.
It starts out with an octave on the C, [Fm] down [B] to the B.
Play that twice.
[Fm] It's going to go [B] down [G] to an octave on the G.
Then you're going to [Bb] do the same thing at the very end of the ending part of the last
chorus [G] where you go to the G.
[Cm]
[Am] [E] [F] [C]
Alright, [Bb] now I know that was quick, but if you need to look at it again, go ahead and play it.
Look at it as many times as you need to to help you because I know that's a lot and a
little bit of time, so take your time.
Look through it a couple of times to help you to get how that works.
The left hand is a little bit different than a normal piano, so usually [C] you want to play
it on the root.
So, if you're playing in the C, your C is going to be the root.
Well, in this [Bb] song, you're going to start on the 3 of [E] that chord on the E.
You're going to just do a [Bb] walk-up, which is going to go an octave, play an octave [E] on the
E's, [F] walk up to the F,
[G] [A] A, and then [Em] you're going to go [F] down to the F, [Bb] then [G] back up to
the G, [Bb] and then down to [C] the C.
It'll end on the C.
And then you're going to play the [E] same exact thing over again.
[F] E, [G] F, G, [A] A.
[F] [G] [C]
[Bb] Alright, let's look at the intro with both hands together.
[G] [C]
[F] [C] [Am] [F] [C]
[F] [G] [F]
[C]
[Eb] Alright, [Em] what I like to do at the end when I play that [C] last C chord, I like to do a little
fill with my left hand.
[B] And what [C] I'll do is I'll start on the C with [G] my pinky, go up to the G with [C] my index, up
to the C with my thumb, and then cross over with my middle [D] finger and play the D, [E] E, [F] F
[E] with my thumb, and then back down to the C, [Bb] or to the [E] E, rather.
And so I can start [B] back the [Bb] intro because the first verse starts back on that same exact
[B] melody, or the same exact [Bb] chording as [C] the intro.
[F] [G]
[Am] [C] [G] [C]
So that first verse, all it is is the intro.
It's the same exact chords.
[Bb] And if you want to, all you can play is just the chords there.
So you can [C] play C, this is an inverted C, or you can play it up here, [F] to the F, [E]
[F] [Gm] to the
[A]
G, to the A minor, [G] down to the F, [Gm]
to the G, down [C] to C.
You [D] can do your little fill [C] again with your bass.
Back down to the E over C chord.
[G]
F, G, [Am] to the A minor.
[C]
[G] [C]
And [G] then this is where it changes.
You're going to go up to the A minor.
[Am] [C] All this is is just [Am] an [E] A and [C] an E over A minor 7, which is G, A, C, E.
[Am] [G] You're going to just walk down to the G.
[C] Down to the F.
Once you get down to the, [F] wipe my brow, you're going to go [E] down to the [C] E octave over a C
chord, then walk back [Dm] down to the D, and then back up to the [Gm] G.
It's going to look something like this.
[Am] [G]
[C] Wipe my brow to the F, C over E, [Dm] and keep pushing [Gm] through up to the G.
[D] And then after you play that G, let's [Gm] go right back to the intro chords.
[C] I couldn't see how [Am] every sign [F] [Dm] pointed straight [C] to you.

So [G] you can play the G and the A together, and then you're going to walk up with your

_ [Bb] _ So it's going to sound a little something [Em] like this.
[C] _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ Alright, once you've played that, you're going to move up to an [Am] A minor chord. _ _ _ _
_ Alright, [Em] and you can play the full A minor [Am] chord there, or you can just _ play the [F] two,
the A and the C, however you like to do it.
[Bb] So it's going to look a [G] little something like this.
[F] _ _ _ _
_ Alright, and then after you play [Bb] that, you're going to go up with your ring finger and your
pinky again on the D [E] and the E. _
_ So it's going to look a little something [G] like this.
_ [Am] _ _
[E] _ _ _ _ _ _ Now, you're [Bb] going to go play the [F] F chord, which this is an inverted F, [A] so you play the
[F] A, C, and F.
_ _ _ You'll play that twice. _
_ _ [C] _ _ Down to the C chord, which is an inverted C, which is the G, C, and E.
_ [Bb] So it'll look [F] like this.
_ [C] _ _ _ [Em] [Bb] Then down to the other [C] inverted C, which is made up of the C, [Em] G, or the E, [C] G, and C.
Alright, let's look at that [Bb] at full speed and watch how it's played.
[C] _ _ _ [G] _ [Am] _ _
[F] _ _ [C] _ _ _ [Bb] Now, the second part of the intro is a little different.
It's built around the same type of chords, but I like to play it a different way.
It starts out with an octave on the C, [Fm] _ _ down [B] to the B.
_ Play that twice.
[Fm] It's going to go [B] down _ [G] to an octave on the G.
_ _ _ _ _ _ Then you're going to [Bb] do the same thing at the very end of the ending part of the last

[G] _ _ [A] _ A, and then [Em] you're going to go [F] down to the F, _ [Bb] then [G] back up to
the G, [Bb] and then down to [C] the C.
It'll end on the C.
And then you're going to play the [E] same exact thing over again.
[F] E, [G] F, G, [A] A.
[F] _ _ [G] _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ [Bb] Alright, let's look at the intro with both hands together.
[G] _ [C] _
_ [F] _ [C] _ [Am] _ _ [F] _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ [F] _ [G] _ [F] _ _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _
[Eb] Alright, [Em] what I like to do at the end when I play that [C] last C chord, I like to do a little
fill with my left hand.
[B] And what [C] I'll do is I'll start on the C with [G] my pinky, go up to the G with [C] my index, up
to the C with my thumb, and then cross over with my middle [D] finger and play the D, _ _ [E] E, _ [F] F
[E] with my thumb, and then back down to the C, [Bb] or to the [E] E, rather.
And so I can start [B] back the [Bb] intro because the first verse starts back on that same exact
_ [B] _ melody, or the same exact [Bb] chording as [C] the intro.
_ [F] _ _ [G] _ _
[Am] _ [C] _ _ [G] _ _ [C] _ _

_ _ _ You [D] can do your little fill [C] again with your bass.
Back down to the _ E over C chord.
_ _ _ _ [G]
F, G, _ _ [Am] _ to the A minor.
_ [C] _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ [C] _ _
And [G] _ _ then this is where it changes.
You're going to go up to the A minor.
[Am] _ _ [C] _ All this is is just [Am] an _ [E] A and [C] an E over A minor 7, which is G, A, C, E.
_ _ [Am] _ _ _ [G] You're going to just walk down to the G.
_ [C] _ Down to the F.
Once you get down to the, [F] wipe my brow, you're going to go [E] down to the _ [C] E octave over a C
chord, _ _ _ then walk back [Dm] down to the D, _ _ _ _ and then back up to the [Gm] G.
It's going to look something like this.
_ [Am] _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ _ [C] Wipe my brow to the F, C over E, [Dm] and keep pushing [Gm] through up to the G. _
_ _ [D] And then after you play that G, let's [Gm] go right back to the intro chords.
_ [C] I couldn't see how [Am] every sign _ [F] [Dm] pointed straight [C] to you. _
