How to play Apologize by One Republic on the Piano chords
Start Jamming...
Hey everybody, thanks for checking out all my videos.
[G] My name is Ryan.
This is how to play Apologize by OneRepublic.
And so many [Gb] of you guys requested this to me [Eb] and wow, it's just an awesome [E] song.
So thanks [G] for kinda getting it out there to me.
And I heard it on the radio too.
I don't know, this is a huge song.
So definitely it's becoming one of my favorites to actually play along with the song.
[Cm] So I'm gonna show you, before [G] I actually get into teaching you step by step, I'm gonna go ahead and play some of the normal parts.
[N] Normal speed so you get an idea.
And just so you know, I have my keyboard [B] set on velocity strings right now.
The version that you hear on the radio starts in strings.
[Cm] Like that.
So I'm gonna go ahead and play this a little bit.
[Ab] [Eb]
[Bb] [C] [Ab] [Eb]
[D] [Ab] And it goes to piano.
[Cm]
[Fm] [Eb] [Gm] [Cm]
[Fm] [Eb] [D]
[Fm] [Eb] [Gm]
[Cm] [Ab] [Eb]
[Bb] [Cm] [Ab]
Okay, so [N] first before I get into the right hand, I'm gonna take you down here to the left hand and show you what that does.
Because the left hand is just gonna be repeating itself throughout the entire song.
The bass is just gonna [C] be C's, [Ab] A flats, [Eb] E flats, [D] and D's.
[Cm] [Ab] [Eb]
[Bb] [Ab]
[Eb] [Bb] [C] So throughout the entire song, it's just gonna repeat.
[D] So keep that [E] in mind and we're gonna focus [Em]
mainly on the right hand here.
[Cm] This is at the beginning when the left hand [Cm] plays C's.
So [C] [G] I use my thumb, index finger, and middle finger.
[Cm] And you're gonna be playing these [Ab] three notes.
Just so you know why I use these fingers is because coming up we're gonna have to play [Gb] F and G here.
And if you notice, [F] my ring [G] finger and pinky finger is just kinda already there.
[Gb] So I try to use my fingers that [G] pretty much are gonna be able to maneuver throughout the next part very [Cm] easily instead of playing like I'll have to [N] move up.
Which isn't always a big deal, but anytime my fingers are already kinda in the right place, I just make it easy.
[Ab] So if you do use the same [Cm] fingers that I'm using, I play in a 3-1-2-1, 3-1-2-1.
And then the next part's [Ab] gonna sound like this.
It's the same pattern, of course, now I'm [Gb] using my ring finger, so you [Gm] play [Fm]
F, A flat, C, A flat.
You play that twice.
[Cm] So from the beginning,
[Ab] [Fm] [Eb] the next part, you're gonna be using B flat, E flat, and G.
[G] And you start off with the same pattern.
[Eb]
At the very end, instead of playing A flat and B again, you play F and E flat.
So hopefully that's not too confusing.
I'm gonna start it back here.
[Cm] [Fm]
[Eb]
F, E flat, and then the last [D] part, this one, the left hand plays Ds on the bass.
[Bb] You're gonna be playing B flat, D, and F here.
So you're gonna play F, B flat, D, B flat, F, [Eb] B flat, E flat, [D] D.
So it's kinda like what we [Eb] just did here.
And then it's kinda the same [Bb] pattern.
[A] So I'm gonna [Cm] take it back.
[Ab]
I'll slow it down [Eb] here.
[Bb] [Gm]
And then it starts [Cm] over.
[Ab]
[Fm] [Eb]
[Bb] [Eb] So [B] I do want to point out something.
At the very beginning of the song, when I played with the strings,
[Cm]
I'm in piano now, but when I was [Ab] with the strings,
[Eb]
when I get to the last part, when my left hand plays [Bb] Ds on the bass,
if you actually listen closely, you do not [D] play E flat and D.
[Bb] You just keep rotating [Fm] between F, D, and [Bb] B flat.
[G] And then when it actually gets into the piano part of the song,
it actually [Bb] does do the E flat, D.
[Gb] So obviously it's gonna sound [G] pretty good either way.
If you [Abm] forget to, at the very beginning, not [G] play the E flat, D.
Hopefully [Am] that makes sense.
It's not a big [Ab] deal either way.
I just listened closely and made [N] sure I got the notes right.
Okay, now when the singing actually begins,
[G] the right hand actually gets a lot [G] easier.
Of course, remember, the left hand's still doing the same bass.
And [Cm] with the right hand, so for each chord,
like we were doing, three notes,
you're gonna play the top two notes together,
[G] and then the one on the bottom [Cm] by itself.
So it's gonna be like this.
So instead of
[Fm] [Eb] [D]
[Bb] [Cm] [Fm]
[Eb] [Bb]
So C and [Cm] E flat together, [Ab] [Fm] C and F together,
[Eb] E flat and G together, and then D [Bb] and F together.
[Db] Okay, [G] on the main part of the song, it's too late to [Cm] apologize.
So [Ab]
[Eb] [C] [G] the left hand's still doing the same [Cm] thing,
and the right hand, you can play E flat and B flat together,
and then tap B flat, C, B flat, E flat.
So it's like
[Ab]
And then when the left hand plays the Ds [D] on the bass,
you can [Abm] play E flat and A flat together, [Eb] G, F, E flat.
[Cm]
[Ab] [Eb]
[C] [Ab] [Eb] [Ab]
Okay, [C] there is gonna be one part
[G] when you actually move up the main part an [C] octave higher,
including the bass, that's also [Gb] gonna move up an octave higher.
So it's just gonna play right here.
[Cm] But I've already taught you this part.
[Ab] [Eb] [Bb]
You're [Abm] just gonna play that one time up there,
and then you're gonna come back down here,
and then just do [Cm] this.
[Ab]
So those are the main parts,
and then now we need to get to the [B] very ending of the song.
Okay, and like the last ten seconds of the song to end it,
you're just gonna get [Cm] back to this.
[Fm] [Eb]
So at the very end, the last chord,
the right hand just plays E flat, B flat, E flat,
and your left hand plays two low E flats.
Just kinda lightly like that,
while your right hand just plays
[G] And that's it.
So those are all the main parts.
