[C]
Have you seen [G] the old man [Am] in the closed town [Em] market?
[F]
[C] The papers
[D] all are [G] juice.
[C] In his [G] eyes you see no pride.
[Am] And so asleep [Em] by his side [C] are yesterday's papers, [G]
the [C] day's new papers.
So how [Em] can you tell me [C] you're [Am] lonely?
[D] And say for you that the [G] sun don't shine.
[C]
Let me take [B] you by the hand,
[Am] lead you through [Em] the streets of London.
[C] I'll show you.
[G]
[C] Hello again.
We're going to finger [N] pick our way through Ralph McTell's Streets of London.
Famous folks on from the 1970s.
The chords are fairly straightforward.
I put the words and the chords underneath the video here so you can see.
I'll quickly take you through the chords and then I'll explain the finger picking technique,
which is more difficult than actually the chords.
So you've got the C.
So for the verse [C] you've got C, [G]
G, [Am] A minor,
[Em] E minor.
That's the first line.
[Gm] [F] Then F,
[C] C, [G] [D]
[G] G.
[N] Then you've got the third line is the same as the first [C] line.
C, [G] G,
[Am] A minor, [Em]
E minor.
[F] And then F,
[C] C, [G]
G7.
[C]
You [G] don't have to play G7.
You can play just G.
It works just as well.
[N] And that's the verse.
The chorus.
So how can you tell me you're lonely?
[F] It's F.
How can you, [Em] E minor, tell [G] me [C] you're lonely?
[Am] A minor, [G] [D]
G,
[G]
G7, [C] C.
[G]
By the hand G, [Am] A minor, lead you through [Em] E minor, Streets of London, and [F] F.
I'll show [C] you something.
[G]
G7, A, G, G, [C]
C.
They're the chords.
[N] They're fairly straightforward chords.
You can find them anywhere on the internet.
[C#] They're done with the word and chords together.
It's nearly always [C] in C.
[N] But it's a finger picking technique that's a little bit difficult,
but if you practice you'll soon get the hang of it.
It's called the Travis technique and you use the thumb and the two fingers.
The thumb for the bass notes, the first finger for the G string,
and the second finger for the B string.
We're playing the middle four strings.
That's all.
The middle four strings for all the chords except D.
And on D we move up to the top four.
So at any one time you're just playing four strings.
And the technique is that you, first of all you put, we'll play a C chord.
First of all you pluck using the thumb and the second finger.
Pluck [C] those two strings.
The outer strings as I call them.
The outer strings of the four.
Pluck [Cm] and then finger pick.
[E] [Em] So [C] you're plucking the outer strings together and then finger picking the inner two.
Then you pluck the outer two.
So you pluck the two together, you pinch the two together.
And the last part of it is going back to the [Em] inner two strings.
[E] So the whole thing is [D#] pinching [C] the outer two strings.
You get that technique, just practice with [N] one chord until you get the technique
and then try to change chords.
Just try to go through a chord progression.
Just try to get used to [A] [C] changing chords.
