[F] [Db] Hi, this is Todd Hoban with Making Music [G] Magazine and today we're going to look at the Hammond
SK [Gm]-1 [G] stage keyboard.
[Gm] I bought my first [G] Hammond organ back in the [C] 60's.
It [Bb] sounded [Cm] great, but it [Bb] was huge, real [G] hard to carry.
And all these years I've been looking for a replacement for that old organ.
We just might have one in this Hammond SK-1.
Let's take a [Gb] closer look.
[G] The SK-1 is tiny.
It's a lot of sound in a very, very small package.
It's very [Gm] light, easy to use.
The keys, you're going [G] to notice, are a little bit shorter, maybe a quarter inch shorter,
but the scale is perfect.
Right out of the box, you're going to want to plug this thing in and play it.
And there's a real good chance that without reading the manual, you [Gm] can do it.
First look, all the buttons, everything is right in front of you and it's pretty intuitive.
Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't read the manual because if you really want to use this
thing, [Dm] read the manual.
[Bb] But just [G] taking a look at the surfaces, you've got your drawbars here, just like on the Hammond organ.
It's going to look very, [F] very familiar.
And you'll see that they [Bb] work [G] absolutely perfectly.
Let me show you.
[C]
[F] The SK-1 [Eb] comes with some standard presets that are awesome.
The first one, of course, is the vintage B3.
Sounds really wonderful.
It's a great sound.
Number two is that really crunchy B3 sound that you can only get by pushing the Leslie.
Listen to this.
[Am] [G] [F] [C] [Am]
[N] Hammond has really done it.
They've captured the vintage sound in a very, very small package.
But they've gone beyond and added a bunch of other keyboard sounds.
Let me show you what we've got in here.
[C]
[Cm] [C] It's important that you do have the sustain pedal if you really want the standard grand
to sound really good.
[Dm]
[C] [Bb] [Cm] [C]
[Em] [C] [F]
[Dm] [C] [Bb] [C]
[A] [C] You can plug your Leslie right [Gm] into the SK-1 with an 8-pin plug.
Very [F] easily done.
If you don't have a [Gm] Leslie speaker, [G] not a problem because the SK-1 comes programmed
with a Leslie on board.
If you're [C] bypassing it, it sounds like this.
Now, listen as you add the Leslie speaker.
Hear the swirling.
But now, we're going to turn on the Leslie and go into fast mode.
The old Hammonds had two keyboards, an upper and a [Bb] lower manual, they were [G] called.
Well, the SK-1 puts it all in one [Bb] box.
To demonstrate the split keyboard, [G] we're going to go to our church organ and we're going
to set up the upper manual [Bbm] to [G] play sort of a flutey sound.
You just go and set that up there.
We're going to take our lower manual [Db] and [C] we are going to set the lower manual up to play
just a bass sound.
You'll notice that I've got the keyboard split.
So on the bottom, we've got the low sound [E] [G] and [A] [C] [Dm]
up top, the flute sound.
Play them together, split keyboard.
[C] [G] [Am]
[G] And here's a feature that the old Hammonds didn't have.
And that was the ability to change the [Cm] octave that you're playing in.
Say [C] you wanted to lower the keyboard down so you got more bass, you can do that.
Or let's say that you want to change the key of something you're playing in, it's [Cm] as simply
as transpose up or down.
[Db]
[D] [Eb] [D] [Db] [C] [G] So there you [Bb] have it, the Hammond SK-1.
I think [G] they've done it.
They've captured all those [Em] fabulous [Gm] Hammond sounds and put them in a tiny, [C] lightweight package.
[G] Pick it up and add it [Gm] onto the gig.
