[F] Alright, Starship Trooper [B] from Yes is made up of three major chords, G, Bb, and C.
All
major [G] chords, a little volume happening here, G, [Eb] Bb, [G] and C.
[C]
And they're kind of interesting
voicings and let me get into that in just a minute, but [A] before I do that I'm going to
show you [Bm] the effects that I used for the song.
To try to kind of simulate [Bb] the original [Abm] outro
sound of Starship Trooper I'm using [Gb] the TC Electronics Stereo Chorus [Bb] and I'm going to
be using that in [Ebm] the flanger mode.
If you look right here there's a switch, a switch
between [Bb] chorus and flange and I'm using it in the flange mode.
You can use any decent
flanger for this, this just happened to be one that I have.
[N] The speed control is set
at .5,
the width at about 2, and the intensity is set very low, I've got it set at a little
bit between and 1. And the gain output is probably medium. [Gb] So that's how I'm trying to get that pitch shifting [G] flange type sound [Ebm] on this. [Bb] Alright, let me go over the chord voicings here. The cool thing about this song [Bm] is that all three of these chords, [G] [Eb] [G] [C]
all three major chords, and they all use the same voicing. And all the voicings [Gbm] do include an open G string, which is kind of a [Bb] neat thing. So let's take a look at this. We're playing with our third finger, we're playing a D note here, this is going to be the G [B] major chord. We're going to play a D note on the 6th string, [D] then we're going to play a B note [Bm] here on the D [B] string, we're going to play the G [G] string open, as we're going to do throughout this whole chord progression, we're going to play the G string open, then we're going to play another G note, and on the high E string with my pinky [Eb] I'm going to be playing [Bb] another D [G] note. So there's the voicing there for the G major chord. Now, I'm going to move this [Gm] down to the, I'm at the, [Bbm] let's see, the 7th, the [Bb] 8th position right now. I'm going to move this down, [B] same chord voicing, to the 4th position, and now this [Bb] note with the [Gb] 1st finger is going to become my new root, this note right here, the E flat. [Eb] So it becomes an E flat major. Alright, and the notes become [Bb] B flat, G, [Gb] open G, E flat, and B flat. [Eb] Now, we're going to move this down to the open [G] position, and this [Gb] becomes a C chord, C [G] major. [C]
And my notes become G, E, [A] open G [G] again, C with the 1st finger, [Ebm] and with the pinky, another G note. [C] So there's [G] my three chords. [Eb] [C]
[G] Now, [N] you notice I'm kind of sliding, when I get to the C, and I'm going back to the beginning of the progression, I'm kind of sliding up [Bm] into that G chord, which just kind of gives it a [Bb] neat kind of a [C] sound. [G]
[Eb] [C]
[G] [Eb]
[C] Okay, [Em] so that's [D] it. Starship [Gb] Trooper, there you go.
