Well, hi everybody.
We're sitting here around the fire enjoying ourselves.
You know, sitting around a campfire is a good time to be telling stories.
And so I thought I'd start out and tell a little bit of one.
This next song we're about to do is called Green River.
At the time it was certainly one of my very favorites that I'd ever recorded.
And it really started out from a time when I was quite young, one, two, three years old.
My family would travel up to Winters, California.
That's in Northern California.
And we would camp at the Hootacrick.
We had a cabin there.
It's a place where I learned how to swim.
It's where I learned how to fish.
I would catch pollywogs.
Of course, I eventually was able to put my head underwater, but for a long time I was too scared to do that.
And of course, dragonflies and other critters were always in the mix.
And a lot of that scenery and those memories made its way into this song.
Another little part of the song, of course, is right up the street from the house I lived in, in El Cerrito.
There was a pharmacy, a drugstore, had a soda fountain.
And one of the drinks they would make for you was a green river.
And I stared at the label on that bottle of syrup called green river when I was about eight years old.
And I said, I'm going to save that.
That's important.
And for some reason, it stuck in my head.
And eventually all this stuff became a [A] song.
All right, let's do [E] the song.
