Hey guys, it's Karl Brown from [C]
GuitarLessons365 [E].com.
Got a quick one for you today.
We're going to learn how to play Free Fallin' by Tom Petty.
So this one's going to be in standard tuning, [A] but you need to put [C] a capo at the first fret.
That'll get you in the right key there, and that's how they play it.
So now we have Tom Petty's [Db] part, and then we have [A] the lead guitarist part where he [Bb] plays
those high [Ab] triads to accompany.
[D] And we basically just have that section, which goes for 90% of the [Bb] song, and then we [A] have
a quick little bridge section.
[Ab] So let's take a look [D] at it here.
Now the chords how Tom Petty [Bb] is going to be playing is just basically that [D] I'm comparing
everything [C] to the capo.
Okay, so [F] this is an E major chord is what I'm going to call it.
Technically it's an F major because of the capo, but I'm comparing everything to [A] the
capo so it makes it easier to understand.
So we have an E [F] major chord, and then [Fm] move this over to an A suspended second, which
is [D] just like an A major chord [C] except you're going to have an open [Bb] B string.
And you're going to strum from the fifth string across.
We have this.
[F] All six strings,
[Bb] then the fifth string across, then [E] that chord again, [Bb] back down to the [F] E,
and then we're going to go to [C] this, [Db] basically it's a C chord but it's really a B chord [C] here
compared to the capo.
[F] That's the second fret here on the A string, [G] [C] four on the D and the G.
I know it's weird [Am] calling that, you see those fret markers there.
Then you have the [C] open B and high E string.
We have [F] this.
[Bb]
[F]
[Cm] So [F] he's just repeating that for most of the song.
Sometimes he'll just hit each one once like [Bb] that, just in the intro.
[C] But [F] sometimes he's just strumming, [Bb] like in a chorus.
[F] [C]
[F] A nice, [Bbm] easy kind of eighth note down-up feel.
You're not going to [F] hit the strings every time.
[Bb]
[F] You just need to feel that rhythm and follow along with a [C] down-up rhythm that's very consistent.
Now the layers that are on top of it sound like [F] this.
[C]
[Gb] This [Db] looks like a D major chord, but [Em] basically four frets up from the capo.
[F] We have that, just those three strings, and then add the [Cm] pinky at one fret higher on the
fifth fret [F] here on the A string, and then hit that [Fm] again, back down to the D [F] shape.
Then we're going to do this, [C] which is going to be starting at the second fret on the high
E, second fret up on the capo, and then four [B] frets up on the capo on the B and the [C] G.
So you have [F] this.
[C]
[F]
[Bb] [F] So that goes with this part.
[Bb]
[C]
Now [Fm] we have a little bridge section, which sounds like [Db] this.
[F] [Bb]
[F] [C] [F]
[Bb]
[F] [C] [F] Now we're back.
So that's just a little power chords.
We're going to have open low E string, [C] second fret up on the capo on the A [F] string, and then
[Bb] slide [Bbm] into the power chord on those same two strings, five frets up on the [Bb] capo, slide
back down to the [Fm] open power chord, [F] and [D] then now this time, [Cm]
seven frets up on the [F] capo.
[Bb]
[C]
[F] [Bb]
[C] And we're back.
[F] [Bb] So it just briefly does that chord progression, and then we're back to the [A] main chord progression,
[G] which is most of the [F] song.
[E] All [Ab] right, so that's about it.
I [A] hope you guys enjoyed it.
