Hi guys, welcome back to the channel.
Today we are going to do a fingerstyle guitar tutorial.
Let's take a listen to the piece.
[Bm] [D]
[G] [D] [Bm] [D]
[Bm] [A]
[D] [F] Okay so that piece was taken from the video Carbon Fiber vs Wood.
It was a comparison
video between two guitars.
If you haven't seen that I'll pop it up right here, hopefully
right now, and you can take a listen to that video.
But since that video was put up I had
a ton of requests for a tutorial.
Normally on the channel I don't do a lot of tutorial
videos just because there are so many great musicians already doing tutorial videos.
But
if you'd like to see more on the channel just let me know in the comments and we'll see
what we can do.
Alright so let's get started.
The first thing we're going to do [Ab] is make sure your guitar
is tuned into dadgad.
So that means you have D, A, D, G, A, D.
So if you need to pause
the video now and make sure you're tuned into dadgad, go ahead and do that.
But let's get
started with the right hand pattern.
So this is essential to the piece.
It features an
alternating [D] thumb pattern, like that.
[Ab] And then your index finger is going to get anchored
to 3rd string so it's only ever going to play 3rd and your middle finger is only ever going
to play 2nd.
Okay so we just need these two fingers and thumb.
But let's look at example
1.
Now it's a 2 bar pattern so we're just going to look at the first one.
So you're
going to have index and [G] thumb together, and that's a quarter note.
[Gm] And then you have a
few eighth notes, so thumb on 4, [G] index, thumb on [D] 6, middle finger on 2nd, and then thumb
on 4th.
[G] Okay so if you need to just practice that bar a few times, [D] just do so, [F] like that.
And if you've only played with a flat pick or you're brand new to fingerstyle guitar,
that might be the most challenging part of the piece, just getting that alternating thumb
back and forth.
Yeah, it can be really challenging at first.
So let's look at the second bar of pattern 1.
It's almost identical to the first bar,
only you don't have your index finger to start, you just have [D] your thumb.
So then when we
put all of pattern 1 together, that's what it sounds like.
And then up to speed.
[Abm] Awesome.
Let's look at pattern 2.
Now pattern 2 occurs at the very end of the song when we're walking
up the neck, [G] so it'll go
[Bm]
[D] So it [Abm] happens in that section, but let's just isolate the
right hand again before we play the piece, and look at pattern 2.
Now when you look at
[B] that measure, it's just the same thing repeated twice.
[D] So it's going to go just like that,
and then up to speed.
[Eb] Okay, next up is the major scale.
So this piece is written in the
key of D, and basically just goes up and down the major [E] scale.
So let's look at the scale
[G] now, and when we combine this with our fingerstyle patterns, that'll give us the tools to play
the song.
So let's look at the scale.
So we start with [D] D major, [Ab] then we go to E [Em] minor,
F sharp minor, [Gbm] [G] G major, [A] A major, B minor, [Bm] C [Dbm] sharp minor, [D] and octave D.
Okay, and then
the example goes [Abm] in reverse [D] as well.
So major, then [Dbm] minor, minor, major, major, [Gbm] minor, [Em] minor,
and then back to [D] D major.
Okay, so you can run that scale up and down just using the
tab, and then once you're comfortable with that, you're ready [G] for the song.
Okay, let's
run through the song at a slow tempo.
[D]
[Bm]
[D]
[A] [D]
[Bm] [D]
And then the walk up, that's where we [A] switch finger
patterns.
[A] [D]
Alright, let's try it at a medium speed.
[Bm]
[D] [G]
[D] [Bm]
[D]
[Bm] [A] [D]
I [F] hope you guys enjoyed the tutorial.
There's something special about playing fingerstyle guitar that's really rewarding, and something
organic about playing with your fingers.
So yeah, I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope this
encourages you guys to [B] pursue fingerstyle guitar.
You don't need the long nails or anything,
you can just play with the pads of your fingers, it just won't be as bright, so don't worry about
that.
[A] I know people are like, [N] it's a little creepy to have long nails on one hand and [B] short
on the other, but it's okay.
Yeah, anyway, I hope you [Bb] had a lot of fun.
Let me know in the comments
if you want to see more tutorials, and yeah, give the [Ab] video a thumbs up, I'd really appreciate that.
Alright, take care, [N] have a great day.
Today we are going to do a fingerstyle guitar tutorial.
