[Cm]
[F] [Bb]
[Eb] He was the first [Fm] guy who ever had enough faith [Bb] in me to help me get started.
And he and his [Eb] wife in New York, and of course I was on the last tour with him.
And before [D] we left, [F] we were playing a tape Buddy [Eb] had produced on me.
[Bb]
And Buddy told [F] me then, he says, you know, he said,
you're not really a hillbilly singer.
[Bb] Don't ever [Eb] limit yourself.
And I remember him [B] saying that.
A historian from Clear Lake, Iowa, [D] three of an agent's top rock [A] and roll singing stars,
Richie Valens, J.P. [Bm] the Big Bopper, Richardson, and Buddy Holly,
[E] died today with their pilot in the [A] crash of a chartered plane.
[Fm] Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper [G] are dead.
These three young men were on the road to highly successful careers, [Bb] and now they're dead.
I [F] don't know how to respond to [Eb] that.
It was so hard to believe [E]
that those [Eb] guys were dead.
[Em]
[B] They talked to people [E] that said they heard where I was killed.
Mr.
[Abm] Carol Anderson, the manager of the surf ballroom, was called out to that plane crash site [Eb] to identify the bodies.
I couldn't [C] believe what I saw.
[C] Richie Valens [A] and Buddy Holly were the two closest to the plane,
and the Big Bopper went beyond [C] the fence about 30 [E] rows of corn.
[A]
[F] It was a pretty gruesome [C] picture.
Richie Valens lost half [D] of his head.
[E] It was just like somebody turning the lights out.
[F]
Everything just stopped.
[Cm] [Ab]
That'll be the day [A] that I die.
[Dm] Well, you see me holding love [A] and it's
It seems [Dm] strange to call Buddy Holly, [Am] who died at the age of 22, the [D] father of rock,
but [A] in his brief time in the spotlight, [E] he created the defining sound of the 50s.
[D] Well, that'll be the day when you say goodbye.
Yeah, [A] that'll be the day when you make me cry.
[D] You say you wanna leave.
You know it's a [Dm] lie
cause [E] that'll be the day when [B] I die.
[Ab] It's [E] so easy [D] to fall in [E] love.
[A] It's [D] so easy to [E]
fall in love.
[Am] [D]
[E] [Am] [D] [E]
[A] People tell [D] me love's [E] for fools.
[A] So here [D] I go [E] breaking all of [A] the rules.
It [D] seems so easy.
So it's [A] all gone easy.
It [D] seems so easy.
Well, [B] you're concerned and [E] ha-ha, ask her.
[A] It's [E] so easy [A] to fall [E] in love.
[A] It's [D] so easy [E] to fall [Am] in love.
[E] [D]
[E] [Am] [D] [E]
[D] [A]
[D] The money owed [Em] by his former management [Dbm] didn't amount to much, only [Gb] $35,000,
but [A] ironically, it would have been enough to prevent him going on that fateful tour.
[B]
The rest of the band were under [E] great pressure to complete the tour.
[E]
They promised us a real [A] big bonus if we'll finish the tour.
[D] And it was like we [Dm] almost didn't have a choice.
[A] What about the funeral?
We have to finish the [Gbm] tour.
[E]
What about the [D] guys?
They're gone.
[B] They're gonna bring in Frankie Avalon and Fabian.
Those were nice guys to meet.
I love Frankie.
He was real great.
Fabian was nice to me, but it wasn't Buddy.
The road managers contacted New York, and so this guy told me in Wayland,
he said, you guys know the old adage, the show must go on.
He said, [G] if you quit, he said, the show will fall.
He said, you got to go out there and back those acts.
He said, you got to keep the show going.
He said, that's what they'd want.
I wanted to go home.
[Abm] I mean, I was devastated.
[Em] I wanted to go home.
And they finally begged us to, we would play that night.
Well, we got drunk and played.
I [Em] still remember some of it, you know.
Man, [N] you know, he's one of the strongest men I believe I've ever met.
Most men look up to Waylon Jennings.
He's a man's man.
[Gb] His heart was broken.
It's a real difficult thing to walk out on stage
and perform with a broken heart.
It took Waylon Jennings over 20 years to come to [D] terms with Buddy's death.
After [E] years of drink and [Gbm] drug addiction,
[B] he finally found superstardom in the world of country [E] music.
[Db] He still acknowledges his debt to [D] Buddy.
[Gb] My Peggyson, [E] oh, well, I love you, gal.
[D] I need you, Peggyson.
[E] I learned more in that [Bm] short time around him
and got some of the best advice of my entire life
that I have used through the years.
[G] And there's never a week that I'm glad that I don't think of [D] Buddy.
[C] Carl Bunch is now a minister of God,
preaching his own version of [G] the gospel through Buddy's music.
He [C] said, you're coming back.
Jesus won't lie.
[G] That'll be the day I learn how to fly.
Well, [C] that'll be the day.
[F] Whole [E] new generations are turned on to Buddy's music through the gospel.
Buddy Holly has opened more doors for me
in the short few weeks that I knew him
than anybody else that I've ever known.
[A] [E] You love me, [Dbm] God, be real.
[A] [D] February 3 [Gbm] may have been the [E] day that Buddy Holly died,
but it was not the day his music [A] died.
[E] The 22-year-old skinny Texan with thick-rimmed glasses
remains a hero of modern [A] music.
[E] He inspired a generation of musicians,
Dylan, [A] Springsteen, [E] Lennon and McCartney.
[A] To date, there are over 100 versions of That'll Be the Day.
His [E]
passion for rock & roll, gift for popular melodies
and unique ability to [D] tap into universal [A] emotions
made him [D] an extraordinary [A] talent
[E] who was [A] tragically taken from us on that dark winter [A] night [E] in Iowa.
[A]
That'll be the day.
