Hey guys, Alex here with the Chicago Music Exchange.
Today I'm very excited to be demonstrating the newest pedal from our friends at Earthquaker
Devices, the Westwood Translucent Drive Manipulator.
What we have here is an extremely versatile and extremely flexible overdrive, and I say
that having played a lot of overdrive pedals through the years.
You have your standard level and drive knob, which do what you'd expect.
It'll get you anywhere from a really good clean boost [F] with the drive all the way down,
all the way up to some really hard rock tones with the drive all the way up, and you have
a lot of flexibility in terms of output with the level.
What makes this pedal really unique and stand out from most overdrive pedals is its powerful
two-band EQ.
So you can boost or cut around 20 dB in both the low and the high frequency knobs, which
for the low frequencies is rolling or adding right around 80 Hz, and on the high frequency
knob is adding or cutting right around 2k.
So you can round out the low end if you have a muddy guitar or put some sparkle back into
the high end on something really dark, but with that much flexibility you can pretty
much play any guitar or any amp and tailor it to exactly what you want it to sound like.
It's not just a standard tone knob that rolls off the high frequencies.
This pedal is perfectly usable with any rig, but will really shine with a low wattage amplifier.
So if you can get your amp just to the edge of breakup and hit it a little bit harder
with the pedal, it'll really start to sing.
And it actually has a really great roll-off too.
If you back off the volume on your guitar a bit, the pedal has a beautiful clean-up,
which we'll demonstrate a little bit with playing.
So we're going to play it today with a couple different guitars.
We're going to use one of our favorites, the CME Les Paul Custom Shop Standard and a Custom
Shop Stratocaster from Fender through a Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue.
Let's turn it up and see how it sounds.
