[N] Hi friends, I am Amit Agarwal.
I am a doctor by profession and today I would like to share
with you my own piano journey.
[Eb] I started learning piano [A]
around a year back when I was 39.
I
always wanted to do something in music and last year I just said no, now I would really
give time to music and develop some sort of musical skill.
So I chose the piano and my
real aim of choosing piano and starting my piano journey was to be able to play
alternative rock songs like Numb, Linkin Park [Abm] and popular Hindi songs like the one that you just
heard fluently on the piano in front of my friends at parties.
[N] It was not a professional goal actually,
just an amateur goal to be able to play the songs that I like.
So [A] I was searching for piano teachers
and I came across Jatinji over the internet.
At the same time I was also experimenting with these
apps like the Flow Keys or other apps you must have heard of.
So the method of Jatinji was
entirely different.
He was quite focused on notations, on the books and sheet music [Eb] whereas
Flow Keys, they were not.
[F] Initially I felt disheartened that [A] over here I am learning
classical pieces which I cannot relate to but over there I was learning western pieces.
But then
after about a month or two I realized with Flow Keys I was getting nowhere because
it was all background music and nothing creative or nothing from your own side was getting into it.
It was just a replication of whatever you are seeing on the screen.
However over here I was
memorizing music, I was playing music even though it was simple pieces at first, the classical
pieces but at least I was going somewhere.
[G] So I carried on with Jatinji and kind of started
enjoying the classical pieces.
Once in a while there were a few pieces which I could relate to
like [N] common tunes which you must have heard in your childhood.
Then 8 to 10 months down the line
again I asked Jatinji how are we doing and should I switch on to western music.
Again he asked me to
be patient for about a month or two.
By that time we had already completed a basic chunk of
learning books, the sheet music books.
So by end of 10th month I started diverting into the popular
music.
To my surprise I was easily able to play any song which I got the sheet music for.
I was
easily able to play it within a week or so up to a very good level.
I started last October and this
October I have already opened a YouTube channel which has three songs as of yet.
They are not
perfect but I think I am getting there and I am really thankful to Jatinji for this and I am really
thankful that I stuck with the sheet music method of learning because I am 100% sure that this cannot
be replicated with these apps.
You have to have a music teacher, you have to have a good music teacher
