Joining us from Los Angeles from our Los Angeles studio Jerry Casale and Mark Mothersball both are from Devo Jerry my pronouncing that right
That's fine.
That's fine.
How do you pay?
Sally okay Italian listen what's
Tell me about your image what you think your image is the image of Devo
Our image is basically self-induced and it came not from ideas outside
But rather from within so our image is honest
Based on what we are as humans.
What is it though?
We are Devo and we're glad of it
How do you think the perception of Devo is throughout?
America ah
Gee, I I'd hesitate to guess I think we have every kind of perception possible
we've been accused of being fascist the clowns of fascist clowns of stupid
That's probably the most complimentary I think Devo may be the most
Misunderstood band ever to show up on the face of the planet mark.
Why is that?
because
Mmm, I mean you look like a couple of nice young guys from Akron.
That's right.
Yeah, well, you know, it's
We were giving them alternative information on
stage through our music
We were dealing with ideas rather than just the same thing over and over again
What's your reputation your image you think among other?
Musical groups whether rock or otherwise, I think they're
Glad that we're experimenting and they're not
For someone who's just turning in and they're tuning in and they hear this question of a misunderstood image about the music and our difference
What is it you think is your difference?
As Mark said we weren't telling them the same old thing
We were dealing with other sets of emotions and alluding to things and we were kind of giving a voice to a lot of I
Think feelings and and ideas that are out there that never never get exposure
[N] We weren't trying to make it for instance in our videos baby pictures for the record company
or a glamour ad that looks like a joy to ask gene commercial or any other gene commercial and
We were doing instead
Kind of
Auto biographical
statements
using images and using costumes and using humor to talk about
Just the irony of life on the planet.
No one particular country or group or anything, but more or less
Taking a little poke it at human nature in general.
Let me take a look
For our viewers at home at one of the rock videos that Devo has done
That was from that was I think
Giacomo right that was the first video we ever got to make that was done in Akron, Ohio in
1976 for three thousand dollars you've made it yourself of a yes, we did
We made it ourselves at that time.
We always worked with our friend Chuck Statler who's now in Minneapolis
We met him at Kent State University when we come back
I want to raise the question
That focuses on a point that you have made in that your rock video and your music are inseparable
We'll talk about that when we come back talking with two [E] members from deep
[A]
[E] [Gb] Let me come back to the point that you made beautiful world has gotten a lot of awards that music video
I mean really it's I guess it's a Museum of Modern Artists somewhere in New York and
AFI put it in their permanent archive and I think the Museum of Modern Art included in AFI gave us an award for it
It's our personal favorite because it's a direct simple
literal statement and the images and the
music work together in such a way as to be probably the best example of how we were
In earnest trying to combine music and video to form music video as a separate
Medium rather than an afterthought
With your strong feeling about that.
You got to be a little bit disappointed that MTV no longer plays your videos
well, if
Once they went to a new format
Where they were no longer just into the art form of music video, but tied to a current hit playlist much like a radio station
we really became on the back burner have not having an album out [G] since
A year [B] and a half ago or actually a year and nine months ago
So that's why you haven't seen Devo on MTV except maybe at 3 in the morning
We recently did put are you experienced on MTV?
Because it's a release from the current album shout.
Okay, let us take a look before you go on any further
Let's take a look at that so that the audience can more appreciate
[A] [D] Mark tell me about that.
I mean, what what's the creative?
Thrust of that.
What are you saying?
What does it say?
[Eb]
What do you hope it says?
Well, that's actually a remake of the old Jimi Hendrix song.
Are you experienced in the 60s?
We kind of did an updated
Devo eyes mutation of the song
Which says what?
positive mutation
Positive mutation and that's it.
I mean that mutation can be positive.
We think that's important that people choose their mutations carefully
For the for defining mutation is simply
an alternative
mutations are all the things that happen to you every day if it's either get fat or lose your hair or
You know drink too much beer or or eat too much sugar
You know, there's bad mutations, but there's also positive [C] mutations and we just try to like radioactivity
like radioactivity
Just try and encourage people to [N] choose their mutations carefully rather than just let them be foisted on them
Are you happy with where music is today?
I mean, do you feel that music is moving in a positive direction?
across the board
Not well, there's never anything I think across the board.
It's
It's always a matter that at any given point in time.
There are significant imaginative and creative advances and
This comes out of a pool of derivative or even retrograde kind of material always any period
Yeah, I think today there are important things being done by a number of people who you know initiated things on the scene
Starting with David Bowie, you know in the middle of 70s and
