[Em] Hi, this is Steve Fortner from Keyword [G] Magazine.
I'm here with Marek Mothersba [Eb] of
Devo who is releasing their first new studio album in
20 [G] years.
We just saw your amazing [N] performances at Coachella and on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Marek has been gracious enough to invite us into
Mutato Musica, [Ab] Devo's headquarters [G] and recording facility [D] on Sunset [C] Boulevard where there is quite an impressive collection of
vintage gear [G] which Marek is going to tell us a little bit about some of his [Ab] favorite pieces.
Right, you know
the one caveat I'm going to give you is that we did empty [F] out the basement and put it all in storage [E] so that Devo
could rehearse, but there are some things here.
[G] Here's a nice carillon that [N] is like half
tubes and [Cm] half
[Fm]
real [Gm] chimes in there.
[A]
[Fm] You
can always [Cm] feel like it's Christmas or there's somebody at the door when you're in Mutato.
[E] You know these.
Oh wow, this is the [Ab] AKS with the touch plate.
Yeah, that's like an old brain, you know, since
[A] this [N] is to me is known as the
Life Aquatic since because I use this for almost every all the cues in
[B] that Wes Anderson movie.
But it also got used on the new Devo record.
We did a couple songs where we used this little sequencer up here.
Oh, yeah, this has got the mini sequencer in it.
This is a memory moog.
My memory of it is I was calling
Bob every week when he first [A] announced he was going to put out a
theremin and so [D] I every week I said I'm buying the first one so I sent him the money right away.
He said okay
you can have the first [C] one and
[Em] every week I'd say do you have it done yet and he'd go no and after about a year he just sent this to [G] me.
He said I'll call you when it when it when it's finished.
[E] An old probably 70s mini
that gets used on stage with [B] Devo.
I had to get them
people at Moog to do a mod for me because [N] it doesn't have reverse sawtooth and
I use the sawtooth both forward and reverse for Smart Patrol.
[Ab] So that I didn't have to have a
[E] engineer full-time [N] I went back to an old SSL that was kind of like
from the
salad days of Devo, the good days of Devo.
So I usually just sit over here and Logic is my
weapon of choice these days.
There's probably about
70 some guitars in this building.
Piano of course is like minified.
These were designed for teaching right?
Yeah, yeah
That's a gorgeous synth there.
Oh wow.
Have you gotten to record with that at all?
Oh, yeah.
I've recorded with everything here [B] in the building.
It's a really nice action too.
[Em] I love this one
it's got a little [Ab] speaker and you [C] can like
take it to a hotel room with you when you're on tour.
This is a dulcetone, an English [G] thing that was super cheap.
[Bb]
[F] But it's sometimes it's just the right sound for a movie because like
We heard these in Rugrats too.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah
Well, probably Pee Wee I started.
[E] This is not really a circuit bent instrument.
What it is is
This is great.
I use this on the Devo record [Em] and what's great about it
It's just an oscillator in here that this row you tune here this [E] row here.
So they're like note pickers
So it's like an alternative keyboard.
This is just a [Db] little Yamaha drum pad.
This one's got this one's really good.
[G]
[Ab] That's the other thing about circuit bent stuff.
It's wonderfully unpredictable.
Yeah, I think the battery's dying but it's still a pretty good instrument.
[D]
[Gb] [Bb]
[Gb] I
Know [C] it's very likeable.
[Eb] [C] [Ebm]
[Fm] [B] If you want ugly you can get ugly with that stuff.
[Bb] This is one where they like they
[Dm] different places on the
[Dbm]
[E] Then there's [Ab] a photocell down here and a strobe light.
But
[C] [Abm] [Gm]
[Fm] [C] [Eb]
So if you [Bb] only need it five notes, it's a great trigger.
[Ebm]
[C]
[Ab] [G] [Db]
[Bb] [Gbm]
There's not much going on with the party.
[Eb]
I think this one I think this one will work.
This one I used on the [Db] album.
[Eb]
[D] [Ab] [Eb]
[Bb] [D]
[Ab] [Eb]
