[Ab] Now I want to show you how I solo within chords, how these shapes that I just showed you [Bb] can really lend themselves to a really [A] fat way of soloing.
You can [Ab] also use these techniques to sort of augment the rhythm [Gb] playing, but there's [Am] such neat ways [A] to have this real economy of motion within the chords, [Bb] where I just lift [B] one finger.
[E] [B]
[E] [B] Just by lifting one finger using the hybrid picking, [Eb] my hand doesn't even hardly [Bb] move, and yet I have a whole lot [G] of really nice [Bb]
[Gb] melodic movement going [Bb] on.
So I'm going to do an example [Abm] for you here where I play in the key of B, I'm going to play over this [A] groove, I'm going to do some things off this lower chord form, this movable form, remember [B] with the root right here.
And then I'm going to move up here to this [Bb] form and show you what I'm talking about, the different sounds that are available just within these, [A] off this basic fingering.
[Abm] Again, this track is in B, I'm going to give you some examples [B] and then we'll break it down after I'm done [Eb] playing.
[B]
So again, I just kept the [Bb] movable forms we talked about [B] right there, and just was [Bb] lifting my third finger up and down on the [Gb] first voicing down here [B] on the second fret.
[E] At one point [Bb] I actually just barred across and let that C sharp ring, [E] [B]
and then I moved up here and did the same thing off this movable form.
[E]
[B] Which, this is [Bb] an added attraction, a bonus track, but you know, it's right [E] there.
[B] [E]
[B] [E] [B]
[Gb] So, [Bb] fool with that, because [A] you're hardly moving at all.
It's a good way to [Gb] integrate, [Bb] understanding [Ab] hybrid picking, how it can [N] really [G] facilitate those [Bb] types of licks in the movement [Gb] within the chords with a real economy of motion.
I [Ab] want to show you now the [Gb] importance, I want to emphasize the importance of hybrid picking.
[A] I'm going to play over a groove in E and do a real, sort of, [G] something I do a lot, a real choppy, kind of an [Ab] eighth note feel.
[Gb] [N]
[C] And, with that, this has, you have to do this with [Gb] hybrid picking to make this sound right, to get [G] the upstrokes with the two fingers [Bb] here, to really get the percussive [Dm] effect.
So, again, this is a groove in [N] E.
[B]
[E]
[A] [E]
[A] [E]
[A] [E]
So, on [Ab] those choppy things right there, what I'm [Gb] really doing is [A] I'm lifting [G] my left hand at [A] the end of each note to [Abm] shorten their duration, to emphasize the choppiness [E] of it.
But, again, the main concept [Ab] to take away here is how the [G] hybrid picking within these [A] basic movable forms can be used to [Ab] really enhance your rhythm playing, to do so many things with a real economy of motion.
[Abm] But you've got to use, you've got to really learn [G] this technique of hybrid [Gb] picking to take full advantage of it.
So, take the time, don't get discouraged.
[Ab] Again, you will be surprised if you just practice it a little bit, simply at first, it really will come together for you.
[Ab] Now I want to show you how I solo within chords, how these shapes that I just showed you [Bb] can really lend themselves to a really [A] fat way of soloing.
