[Em] Chad Atkins called [E] himself a certified guitar player.
[B] That doesn't [F#m] begin to hint at [E] his extraordinary range [B] of achievements.
[E] [A#m] Not just a [E] gifted and influential [A] musician, Atkins was a technical innovator and a record producer who transformed country music.
[D] [Em] Born in [A] rural Tennessee in 1924, [F#]
[B] Chester Burton Atkins taught himself to play [F#m] guitar by [E] listening to the radio.
[A] He developed a unique finger-picking style and by the late 40s was one of [F#m] Nashville's hottest session players.
He later [A] became RCA Records' top country producer.
Atkins transported country [A#m] music from its hillbilly [Em] roots to a [E] sound that spoke to the whole country and then the [A] whole [B] world.
[F#] [A]
[B] Well, this one [E] isn't great.
This one there's nobody liking.
Along the way, he sold over [A] 35 million [B] records as a solo artist [F#] and won [A] 14 Grammys.
[B] When Chet died in [E] 2001, he left behind a music business he had transformed and generations [B] of guitar players he [F#] inspired.

[B] [E]
[G#] Ladies and gentlemen, Marty Stewart and Brian Setzer.
Thank you very much.
[N] Tonight we're here to honor another legend.
I think Brian will agree there's every other guitar player and then there's Chet.
Chet Atkins began his career in country music and went on to transcend musical boundaries for more than 50 years.
Early on, he worked as a fiddle player, but his first love was the guitar.
After he settled in Nashville in 1950, Chet began to organize recording sessions for record producer Steve Scholes, who signed Elvis to RCA in 1955.
In January 1956, Chet and Scotty played guitar on Elvis Presley's first Nashville sessions, which yielded Heartbreak Hotel.
Pretty good way to start it out.
When the Beatles first came to America in 1964, George Harrison was playing a Gretsch country gentleman model named after one of Chet's hit songs.
Chet Atkins passed away.
He left us an enduring legacy that listeners will always be able to enjoy and guys like Brian we can always strive for.
But I know I speak for millions when I say I feel blessed that his time on earth overlap with mine.
God only lays Chet Atkins on you once in a lifetime.
And I'm glad I was here to witness it.
Ladies and gentlemen, would you please join me in welcoming Chet Atkins as your newest rock star into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
[G#]
[N] Chet's only grandson.
Take it home for him.
I'd like to just say thank you on behalf of my family and all the guitar players out there.
We're proud of this.
Thank you very much.
[A#] [E]
[N] I got to meet Chet Atkins last year before he passed away and he [E] goes, well, is there something I could show you?
And I said, well, you got anything in B flat?
And he goes, what are you doing up in B flat?
And I said, I got these horn guys, 16 horn players.
So as he's showing me this stuff, [A#] he shows me this little lick.
It goes like this.
[A#m] [A] [Cm] [A#]
[Gm] [G] [Am]
[Gm] [Em] And he goes, yeah, I stole that from Earl Travis.
Then I said, well, what about the solo?
So he goes, well, [A#m] I got this.
And he goes, [A#]
[D] [G#]
[Em] oh, that's pretty good.
[C] Where'd that come from, Danny?
He's [C#] just telling me he stole that from Jerry Reed.
So he had a great sense of humor and it really came out in his playing.
And I happen to be playing a Chet Atkins model guitar.
So I'd like to play you one more song if I could.
And I'm going to let Marty Stewart talk, because [C] he's better at it than me.
