Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues - Guitar Lesson (A BLAST TO PLAY!) chords
Start Jamming...
John is in the basement mixing up the medicine I'm on the pavement thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat badge had laid off Says he's got a bad cough wants to get
it [D] paid off Look out kid, it's something you did
[A] God knows when you're gonna do it again You better duck down the alleyway looking
for a new [E] friend The man in the coon skin cap in the big [A] pen
Wants some eleven dollar bills but you only got ten
[E]
[D]
This song follows your basic 1-4-5 rock and roll chord progression.
Our one [A] chord is going to be our E, our four chord is going to be our [D] A, [D] and our five chord
is going to be [E] our B.
Now the strumming pattern for this song revolves around this bass strumming [A] pattern.
So it's pluck, down, down, up, down, up, over and over and over again.
But like I said it's your bass [Em] strumming pattern.
So Bob [N] always frays away from his bass strumming pattern.
He goes off, he improvises, then he always comes back.
So if we were to play through the song, which is the same thing over [B] and over again, it
goes like [A] this.
[D] [A]
[E]
That's [Em] through one of the verses right there.
So you can basically see when the changes happen.
You just gotta play along with the original recording [N] to get the changes down.
He basically goes from [A] E, stays on it for a really long time, then goes to [D] A really
quickly, and then goes back to E for four counts, and then he goes to B [E] for two counts
the same amount of time he was on the [D#] A chord, and then back to an E.
[A] And that's basically the whole [Am] song.
Now you can have a lot of fun with this [N] song with improvising.
And if you practice with this song, you can actually turn this into a really cool guitar exercise.
Before we get into that though, one more thing I want to show you.
In this song he does a bunch of [C] different improvisations.
What he's doing over the E major chord, I've seen this in the live footage, you can actually
hear this in the original recording, what he does is he does an E minor and then he
goes to an [A] E.
So he goes, now to make an E minor, [B] it's an E, we just take our pointer finger off the strings.
So he has his pointer finger [A] off the strings, [Am] and then he puts it on.
[Em] Then when we go to our A chord, you can do an [D] A7, which is like an A, we just take our
middle finger off the strings, and then back to [A] our E.
[Am] And for the B, I really don't improvise a whole lot with the B, but you can do a B7
[E] chord, so instead of, you can [E] go, [Am] and a B7 right there, it's a little bit complicated
to get the fingering down, but middle finger on the second fret on the A string, pointer
finger on the first fret on the D string, ring finger on the second fret on the G string,
open B string, and then pinky on the second fret on the E string.
[E] So, [Am] and then back to E.
[A]
Now with all the chord variations I showed you, [G] of each one of those three chords and
the strumming pattern, you can come up with almost infinite possibilities for this song.
It's so simple because it's just basically one strumming pattern, and also three chords
just over and over and over again.
So I'm gonna play through the verse once for you, and just kind of jam on it and show you
[A] all the stuff I can do.
[Am]
[D]
[A]
[E] [A]
[E] You get the idea.
