[Db]
There we go
[Eb] well
[Ab] This is my first single.
This is tell it to my heart, and this is where it [Db] all began for me really ultimately [Eb] I
Was working in a Russian nightclub
[Fm] Brighton Beach and
My production [Eb] partner at the time.
I think I was 20 years old was Rick wake.
He was [Fm] 19 and
He really believed in my voice and
[Cm] Graduated high school a couple years before that and was driving down the West Side [Fm] Highway.
I'm from New York [G] and
[Db]
Rick was like we need that [Ab] song we need that crossover song and I've done [Cm] a couple of bands already
And I've done original [Db] bands, and I played every club in New York, and I was like a crossover
I go well everybody's getting these 12 inches everybody's getting these [C] dance deals
And I don't want to be in a band anymore, and he goes well
We [E] need that [Db] crossover so we can get on the mix shows at [D] night, and I go [Ab] well
[Eb] Let me see let me see let me think about this so what we're gonna write it where we [Fm] not gonna write it
[Db] Anyway long story short as I'm driving around
[Ab] In New York [Eb] City, and I'm on the West Side Highway
And I see a kid Anthony that I went to high school with and [Fm] he goes
Leslie what are you doing?
And we're talking for a minute, and he goes [Eb] listen
I go I'm just trying to find a song and I'm just working you know I'm recording and I'm [Fm] singing does what you always were
Doing that and he goes listen
I know a girl at Warner Chappell [Eb] publishing and I used to work there with [Cm] her because let me give her a call
[Eb] Well [Db] long story short as she we met she gave me a cassette
[Ab] With about five [Cm] songs on it and one of them was tell it to my heart
And I [Db] played it for Rick and Rick or the tape and Rick said I like that song the best he goes
Let's call your [Fm] dad [C] so we called my dad
I mean at that point like I said I'd already been working in [Db] many clubs
And we'd already done a couple of 12 [Eb] inches under Leslie
And we knew enough [Ab] in in the promotion world in the [Fm] 12-inch world on how to [Ab] get a single [Db] out
Not necessarily on radio, [Eb] but crossover, and so we did a contract with my dad for six thousand [Fm] dollars to [G] record tell it to my [Db] heart and
[Eb] This is not the first original cover the first original cover [Fm] of this 12-inch had no [Eb] picture on it
[Db]
I think that was the point
[Eb] And I remember the day.
I took this [Fm] picture.
It was the first photo shoot.
I ever did
[Db] Pretty damn good
[Eb] They put a lot of hair a lot of fake hair [Ab] a lot of hair [Fm] clips in and that was a skirt
I was [Ab] wearing I used to hang out on 2nd Avenue [Eb] and 8th Street
And that was a skirt
We put it in my hair and [Ab] this was from love spit love and there was a lot of those clubs [N] down there
If you know dance interior and private eyes this was all [Db] really
Mid 80s [Eb] really you know that stuff you see in [Gm] Madonna's video and the [Ab] first stuff like a virgin [Db] and that earlier stuff
that's where we were all hanging out and
[Eb] These were some of those really influential new designers
[Fm] You know this was leather pleather, [Eb] and [Bbm] it was just [Ab] obviously a pretty [Eb] impactual look although.
I didn't know it when I [Cm] was basically
[Fm] to the camera, [Db] but
[Ab] that was my first [Eb] video too, and
It just goes to show you timing is everything on [Fm] some level, but that overnight [Ab] success and stardom is all [Eb] those 20 years before and
We could never imagine what we stepped [Db] into and where where it was all going
But we definitely had the heart and the [Eb] passion for it, and that is [Cm] my story of tell it to my heart
[Ab] [Fm] [Eb] [Db]
[F] I think we played in Elliot Lake
I remember forget that on a Saturday night that we drove all night
[C] And we got up Sunday morning and went to our producers house and [E] recorded this [F] song in his basement along [E] with face-to-face and funny business
He said to me.
[A] Oh man.
You know that's a b-side [E] and I said no
I said no
[A] I honestly really do believe this could and I it was one of [E] those moments where you had to kind of stand up for what?
You what you really
