Hey what's up it's [N] Marcelo the Bass Wizard playing Detroit by Marcus Miller.
I'm going to play it first and then I'm going to show you how to play it.
Check it out.
[G]
[C] [Dm] [Bb]
[C] [F] [G]
[Bb] [D]
[C] [G]
[Cm] [C] [Bb]
[C] [F] [G]
[C] [Db] [Gm]
[G] [C] [Bb]
[C] [G]
[Bb] [C] [Bb]
[C] [G]
[Bb]
[C] [G]
[C] [Db] [Gm]
[N] Okay so here's how to play it.
Now the main thing with a line like this is you really got to pay attention to those ghost notes.
And by ghost notes what I mean is those muted notes.
That's just as important as the actual notes to make up the rhythm of the line.
If you play it without that it's really not going to groove and it's just not going to sound right.
Now the line [G] starts in the G in the 5th fret of the D string.
The whole
[Bb]
line [Am]
[G] is basically just [Bb] G minor pentatonic.
[G] So we start off on that G, go to the B [Bb] flat 6th fret [G] E string.
[C]
[Db] [C]
[G] [C] [Dm]
[Bb] So B flat 6th fret of the [E] G string.
[C]
C 3rd fret of the A [Db] string.
Then it slides into the [D] D on the 5th fret of the A [F] string.
And then you [Dm] pluck that F right there.
[G]
[Bb] [D]
And I'm also adding, I'm [G] just plucking the, right after I hit that G on the E string,
I just pluck the G string right here muted.
That's one of the ghost notes.
[Bb] [Db] [Eb]
So that's the first [G] part.
[Dm] [C] [Bb]
Next you go to the B flat right here.
[G] 1st fret A string.
But there's a ghost note before that too.
There's
[Db] [C] two [Bb]
ghost notes right there.
I pluck G string, which I mute with all the A fingers right here.
[G]
[C] [Bb]
[E] And then I also mute the A string before I fret that B flat.
And I [Bb] thumb that muted A string.
[E] Same thing for the C.
[Bb]
[C] [Eb] [E]
So the line again from the [G] beginning.
[C]
[Db] [C]
[Bb]
So after you do the C, the D flat, [C]
C.
So I pluck the G string muted.
Thumb the A string muted twice.
[D] [Bb]
[C] [Dm] I forget sometimes when I try to break it down like that.
I have to play the whole thing again.
[Bb] [C]
[G] Yeah, so pluck the G [C] string muted.
[G]
[C] [G] [D]
[G]
So again from the beginning.
[Bb] [C]
[G]
So that's the first part.
The second part, they're all pretty much similar.
It just kind of changes in the last part.
So the second part goes.
[Db] [Bb] [C]
[G]
[E] When I forgot to add that, I'm doing that little slide at the end of the first one too.
[G] So basically, [Am] you just pluck the [G] G right there.
[Bb]
[C]
[F] [Ab] [G] [C]
[Bb] [C]
[F] [G] [Bb]
[G] And then the third one is.
[C] [Bb]
[C] [N] So that right there is basically just what I did before.
Those ghost notes.
Pluck the muted A string, muted G string, but you do it twice in a row.
And don't worry if you can't do it up to speed.
Just [G] start with this really slow.
[C] [Bb] [C]
[F] [G] [C]
[Dm] [C] [Bb]
[D] You know, it's okay to start that way and just gradually increase the speed until you can do it.
[G]
[Bb] [C] [Bb]
[C] [G]
[Bb]
[C] [F] [G]
[Bb] [C]
[G]
[Bb] And [G] that lick right there.
So after you do that part.
[C] [F]
[E] [G] You're going to slide [Dm] up the 12th fret right here.
[G] And you're going to [F] play the F on the G string.
[Gb] The F sharp [G] and the [F] G.
I double thumb on this thing.
[G]
[D]
And the one thing that I do in this is.
If you're playing a line in school like that.
You're going to get the strings ringing like that, which you don't want.
So what [F] I do is when I [D] slide up.
I keep my index finger covering all the strings [Dm] so I can mute them.
And then I kind of just with the bass [Gb] over here.
[G] [F] I fret that F, but I'm muting these two.
So I [C] don't get all that ringing going on.
[G] [Em]
So that's the fourth and [Gm] the last one.
So [C] you're
[Bb] just going to do the same thing.
[C]
[Db] [D] [Gm]
[G] [Bb] So there you go.
That's Detroit by Marcus Miller.
If you guys have any questions, leave a comment.
And I know that's not 100% note for note what he plays on the record.
I change a few things.
So I don't want to see any comments saying.
Oh, that's not exactly what he did on the song.
I [F] mean, the basic groove is the same.
I change a few ghost notes a few things here and there.
But it works.
I think it sounds cool.
So yeah, if you guys have any questions, let me know.
Hope you guys enjoyed this.
And make sure you subscribe.
Because I'm going to be posting a lot more lessons like this one.
[Cm] See you later.
[Eb] [Bb] Peace.
