I became familiar with her music after, I guess it was 1992 when I was just starting out.
[F] And I got invited by [A] Nancy Griffith [G] to come sing on her [Gb] really amazing record,
I [N] listened to that again recently, All the Voices, All the Voids.
That was masterpiece.
And she had been a big fan of Kate's, and she did this wonderful song called Across the Great [Eb] Divide.
And [Bb]
I didn't get [Eb] invited to sing on that one, Amy O [Bb]'Hara's got that one, but [N] I got to,
right after that Nancy invited me to tour with her.
I had been a big fan, and of course I was just starting out, it was kind of one of these unbelievable things.
And so I got to go out on the road for [F] eight weeks and we sang the song every [B] night.
[G] And Nancy poured her heart into what she was [N] doing, and she left a great body of work behind for all of us.
And so did Kate, and [Bb] so did John [N] Bryan, and so did so many others.
And it's just a pleasure to walk here [Ab] with all the [F] other humans, isn't it?
Well, I said all, [N] didn't I?
I'm working on the all part.
I really do want to get there.
[Eb] Maybe I am and don't know it.
[Bb] But I heard somebody [N] say once, a good person is nothing but a bad person's teacher,
a bad person is nothing more than a good person's job.
[G] I don't like the good [Fm] bad thing, but I didn't want it to be [G] a mile long, and apparently whoever came up with it,
they didn't want it to be [C] super long either, so you [Bb] get the drift.
And I [Gm] guess we're just each other's teacher and each other's [Eb] job, [Bb] right?
Not so sure.
So anyway, [Gb] I thought [N] I'd do this song of Kate's that [G] I also think [Gb] of a Nancy song.
In my mind, I kind of [Bb] merged some of that.
I've been walking
[Eb] [Bb] in my sleep
[Gm] Counting trouble, still [Eb] counting shame
Where [Bb] the years went, I [Gm] can't say
I [Eb] just turned [F] around, [Bb] gone away
I've been sifting
[Eb] through [Bb] the layers of [Gm] dusty books
No [Eb] faded papers to [Bb] tell the story
I used to [Gm] know it was one [Eb] that happened [F] so [Bb] long ago
[Eb] [Bb]
Yesterday, I [Gm]
found myself on [Bb] the [Eb]
mountainside
Where [Bb]
the river changed [Gm] direction [Bb] and [Eb] crossed [F] the [Bb] great divide
I hope you're singing with me if you know it.
I heard [Eb] the [Bb] yellow calling
The [Gm] child that [Bb] asked the night [Eb] was calling
With [Bb] a question, and I [Gm] replied
Now [Eb] he's gone, [F] across the [Bb]
borderline
Gone away, [Eb] [Bb]
yesterday
And [Gm] I find myself on [Bb] the
[Eb] mountainside
Where [Bb]
the river [Gm] changed direction [Bb] and [Eb] crossed [F] the great [Bb] divide
I'm still
[Eb] [Bb]
asleep
It's [Gm] the one, the [Eb] cross between
The [Bb] edge of night and the break [Gm] of day
[Bb] [Gm] It's where [Eb] the darkness [F] [Bb] rolls away
It's gone away, [Eb] [Bb]
yesterday
And [Gm] I find myself on [Bb] the [Eb]
mountainside
[Bb] Where the river changed [Gm] [Bb] direction and [Eb] [F] crossed the great [Bb] divide
Where the river changed [Gm] direction and [Eb]
crossed [F] the great [Bb] divide
[Eb] [Bb]
[Gm] [Bb]
[Gm] [Eb]

[F] Where the river [Bb] changed direction and crossed the great divide

[Bb] But I heard somebody [N] say once, a good person is nothing but a bad person's teacher,

[G] I don't like the good [Fm] bad thing, but I didn't want it to be [G] a mile long, and apparently whoever came up with it,
