[N] Hey guys, it's Carl Brown from Guitar Lessons 365.com.
I've got a quick and easy one for you today.
We're going to learn how to play the three chords that make up
Horse With No Name by America.
Now, this song is originally recorded with lots of guitars.
And guitars and crazy whacked out tunings.
But this, what I'm showing you here is how to kind of play it on a standard string guitar.
I mean, there's 12 string guitars in there that are standard tuned,
and there's other ones that are just, you know, off the wall tunings.
So, this is a good representation of the sound that they're getting together.
So, what we're going to do here is just learn [E] the three chords,
and then you'll sound like the real deal.
So, we're going to start here, low E [B] open.
Then the second fret there on [E] the A string.
[B] [Bm] [G] Open D, open G.
Third fret on the B [F#] string.
And then the second fret on [Em] the high E.
[F#m] It's a really nice sounding [Em] chord.
So, you strum that for a full four beats.
And now we get to this chord shape, which you've probably not run into [F#] before.
We're going to have the second fret on the low E, and the second [A] fret on the G.
All the other strings [D] are open, except [Am] you're going to be muting the A string
with the bottom of your [F#m] middle finger.
[E] So, [D] you're going to play that.
[B]
And then the third chord is going to be just like this,
except pick up the second finger,
and let it just lightly still mute that A string,
but all the other strings just get to ring out.
So, we have this.
[Em]
[D] Two beats.
[E]
[Em]
[F#m] [A] [Em]
[D] [A]
[Em] [F#m]
[E] Now, you see I'm kind of accenting those upstrokes,
especially on [F#] the last two chords.
[E]
[Em]
[F#m] [E]
[Em] [F#] All right, it's as simple as that.
Just kind of get those three chords underneath your fingers.
If you're a beginner guitarist, this is a great one to learn,
to kind of learn how to keep that [G] steady eighth note feel going in the right hand.
The strumming is basically you're just keeping a [Em] down-up motion that is nonstop.
That's the key to it.
And you just lock into the groove.
Now, you can see I'm not hitting the strings every time.
You just keep this steady tempo going, kind of like your own metronome.
Just, and then up, and then just hit some of them.
Just keep that motion going, but you're going to be missing the strings sometimes,
and that's how you vary the rhythm.
But you always want that momentum to just keep going.
[F#m]
[E] [Em]
[F#m] [E]
[N] And as you get good at it, then you'll start accenting notes,
just hitting them a little bit harder,
but you're still keeping that steady down-up motion that is nonstop.
All right, hope you guys enjoyed it.
