Lick number four, Hot Rod.
This is my lead from our Commander Cody hit
from 1972, Hot Rod Lincoln.
Let me play it for you.
[E]
[A] [B]
[E] [B]
[A] [B] [E]
All right, let's slow this Lincoln down
and see what the heck's going on with it.
Starts out with [B] a
It's kind of a pre-bend, kind of a bend into a pre-bend.
[E] Now, big time up and down picking.
It's not gonna swing otherwise.
It's gotta be
Slight little bit of a shuffle to it.
Right hand down here, closer to the bridge
so you get that nice twang
and the strings aren't moving too far so you can hit them.
There's a couple of problems here that we'll work out
that are fixable or doable,
but you have to think about it.
It starts out with
[C#]
[G#] So far so good.
[F#] Up and down, and you'll know up and down, up and down.
Check out after one of the licks.
Start on the downstroke and if you end on the upstroke,
you've either done it correctly
or you've made an even number of mistakes.
Either way, you [E] know what you're doing.
A string, the A chord, [Am] exactly the same.
[E] [C#m] Now for the five chord, [B] we got a problem.
We've gotta get from second [D] position to fourth position.
[G] So what we're gonna do, play the first two notes
on the A string, the B note, [B] for the B chord.
Bam, bam.
Now you gotta reach up with the adjacent finger
from your index to your middle.
You gotta get from the second fret to the fifth fret
to be in position to play the exact same lick,
but two frets up.
[D] Well, once [D#m] you get here, you're home free.
[G#] [E]
[B] Until you get here, then you gotta slide back down
to second position.
So what that slide is,
you're gonna end up with your ring finger on the sixth fret,
slide down until you can reach the second fret
with your index finger on the same string.
So let's just take that part slow one more time.
We're gonna be playing the B note with the index finger.
Then with your middle finger, three frets up to the [D] fifth,
[D#m] and you're home free.
[G#] [E] [A]
[B] Slide down.
Then the last part is you got a [E] funny little triplet-y thing
at the end.
Bam, bam, bam, boom, bam, bam, down, [C#] down, [B] up, down.
Down, [E] up, pull, down.
The last note you can play are up or down.
I'm not gonna be there to watch you.
Do whatever you want.
I've done it both ways.
So the last three notes are,
[B] last [E] three notes are,
and the second to the last note, I pull off.
All right, let's take the whole thing nice and slow.
[G] [E] Use your pinky, come [Bm] up.
[C#] [G#m] Same thing on the A [E] string.
Here's that [Em] pinky again.
