Lick number 23, Keep It Together.
Our take on Tom Romi's classic solo from Buck Owens,
Together Again.
It's a pedal steel thing, so we're going to have to use a bunch of bends
and move around the neck a bunch.
Let's give it a try.
[C]
[Dm] [F]
[G]
[D]
[C] [Em]
[C]
[F]
[G]
[C]
We're going to break this down into small,
chewable pieces.
[Em]
It starts out with two notes of a C chord, and we're going to bend them both up.
We're going to bend the G note on the G string at the 12th fret up a whole step.
[A]
We're going to bend
the E, the third of the C chord on the E string, up a half fret.
So we're essentially going [C] up [Em] to
an F chord, and here's how it works.
We're going to slide back.
[Cm] That's [Em] the first lick.
Let's try
that again.
[Cm]
Then we're going to flesh out that C chord down here in this C position, fifth fret,
[D] and we're going to cover the top two strings at the eighth fret with our pinky and push up with
the other three fingers on the G string to complete the C chord, to move up from the second up to the
third of the [C] C chord.
It's going to sound like this.
[Em]
[Am] Now we're going to have to get ready to go
to an F [E] chord.
Keep the basic shape of this, but open up the B string so it's part of the fifth
fret bar.
Actually, we're just going to play [Am] these two notes.
[A] You're going to bend the E note on the
B string up to an F [Am] while you're droning the high C with your pinky.
This is really an F chord [F] that
you're hammering on the sixth to.
Here's your F chord, but [E] you don't need the whole thing.
Now, this is kind of a funny move.
We want these two notes here, but we need to free up a finger
to bend up.
[Cm] So,
[F] still an F.
This [Em] is the F lick that leads us into the G.
[F] We have to slide these
down, [B]
[F] [B] and now we're in a G chord.
[G] We're going to play that G chord with a [G] hammer.
So, just that
much [B] again.
[A] Then [Bb] back up here to [C] the C.
Now we've got a little F chord turnaround at the end of that.
Let's go through those pieces one [Em] at a time again.
Let's start with the first C position,
then go down here to this C position with your pinky on the top two strings, and bend with all
your
Use all three fingers to bend that [Am] string.
Now, release the B string so we can do this.
[A]
[Am] Now you're going to hammer.
[E] We're in a nice F chord on the fifth fret,
[F] and we're going to replace these two fingers with these two fingers.
[G]
[Bm] G [A] chord.
[G] Back to the opening lick, [Em] end [C] with a C, [F] up to the F, [Em] and you're done.
Nothing to it.
Nice and slow now.
[Am]
Forgot to show you that little thing.
[Bb] Bending up a third to the [A] fourth.
[Fm] [B]
[G] [Em]
[C] [Em] [G]
