The Blues Brothers has to be one of my favorite [F] music comedies of all time
with appearances of Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker
There's so much good music here, it's ridiculous
So in this video we're gonna take a look at three songs from the movie
and let's see how that plays and feels
[Am]
[C]
[A] [Am] [A] [Am]
[Dm] [E] [Am]
[B] It's 106 miles to Chicago
We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes
It's [N] dark and we're wearing sunglasses Hit it!
The guitar solo from Rawhide
And of course the guitar work here of Steve the Colonel Cropper
And he's one of those guitarists that are very similar to Scotty Moore
It all looks very easy what he's playing
But when you take a closer look, it's not
It's [A] very, very effective
In short, less is more
So for example, when they have this country hillbilly tune
and he needs to play an opening lick
What does Steve play?
He does
[Em] [A]
That's absolutely perfect for the old song for the atmosphere
You can't improve on that Brilliantly done
And this song, Rawhide, is one of those tunes where it's ideal for a beginner
Just simple chords, really
Rolling, rolling, rolling
Oh the streams are rolling
[C] Deep and dark is rolling Rawhide
But in order to make it a bit more interesting
You might want to play it with a more Hank Williams type of [A] country picking
[E] That sort of stuff
Now that's actually a little [B] bit more difficult
The chords are just as easy, but it's all on the right hand
So [A] first you need to know the pattern
And then do the palm muting, bottom strings
[F] Finally, the icing on the cake
See if you can play the D string twice instead of just once
[E] [Am]
That's it
[C]
[A] [Am] [D]
[G] [Am] [G] [F] [E]
[Am] [Ab]
[Bb] The caddy
[G] Where's the caddy?
The what?
[F] The Cadillac we used to have The [Gm] Bluesmobile
I traded it
You traded the Bluesmobile for this?
No, [Bb] for a microphone
[E]
Peter
[A] [E]
[F] [E]
[A] [G] [E]
[D] [Ab] Gunn theme
The second song we're going to take a look at
And another opening tune for a [E] television series
Way back in the [Em] 50s Peter [E] Gunn
All but forgotten by now
Except for the opening tune of course
And I have to say
Few riffs are more badass than
[G] This Fantastic
It sort of [F] reminds me [Gb] of
[E] [G] [Gb] [E] [Gb]
[E] It has that same type of vibe
Anyway, to play this one
It's actually fairly easy
The notes are
[E] [A]
[Ab] [E] [Gb] [E] [Ab] Not too difficult at all
But we have to play this riff continuously to no [Db] end
So don't play everything downwards
But rather do some alternate picking
And you can keep it [E] up forever
[Gb] And [E]
[A] [E] [E] [A] [Ab] [D] when it comes to playing the melody of the horns
You can play it in octaves like this
[B] [Em] [D] Or [Bm] [F]
[E] you can play it with a bit of Hendrix flavor
Which is what I like to do
[G] [E]
Jake, [Abm]
[A] [E]
[A] [Em] [E]
the sign says
Tonight only the good old boys Blues Brothers
It should read
Tonight only the Blues Brothers triumphant return
Must be some kind of mistake
[G] [A] [Em]
[A] [Em]
[A]
John Lee Hooker
One of my favorite guitar players
And he's very interesting
He [Db] probably has the worst technique
Most primitive technique of all
Worst is not a good word Primitive
If you want to go to [G] Berklee College Music
And during the audition you play like this
Probably [Ab] throw you out
But that's John Lee Hooker
But of course
To play it with the feel like John Lee Hooker
Is a totally different thing
Now this song Boogie Chillin
It has that famous boogie rhythm, [A] right?
[E] CZ Top would later use it for one of their songs
And this is actually very difficult to do
Now the left hand
[A] Very very easy
It only has one chord
Two chords actually
This A chord
And there's the A7 [N] That's it
So that's fairly easy
But [A] the rhythm
This is difficult
You notice one is louder
Two, three, four
Two, three, four
You can do that
And you want to add that sliding bass
Now I use the pinky finger
[Fm] And don't worry about the melody here
It's all about the feel [G] [A] That makes
Then add the A7
And you have to sing like John Lee Hooker
[G] [A] [C] Okay that
That's one of the frustrations of my life
I can play the blues
But I sure as hell can't sing the blues
At least not like John Lee Hooker
Okay so in this video we've covered
Rawhide, Peter Gunn and Boogie Chillin' by John Lee Hooker
And to be honest
I could have done a lot more songs
Because there are so many great songs in this movie
[F] [Bb]
[C] [F] [Bb] Everybody
[F] Let me know if you enjoyed this video
I can easily make a part two
And remember you can find the tabs as always
[G] And also the backing tracks on my Patreon site
This was Guitar Pilgrim for [A] today
And I will see you
[Bm] [A] [Bm] [G] [E]
[Eb] [Gbm] [B] [E]
[A] [Abm] [E] [A] [Em] [A]
[E] [D] [E] [A]
[Em] [Bm] [A]
