[A]
Hi, welcome to 5-Minute Guitar Lessons.
In today's lesson, I'm going to show you how to play Bob Marley's Three Little Birds.
We'll start by taking a look at the chords.
The chords in order are A, and for A we strum 5 strings.
E, [C#] and for E we can [E] strum all 6 strings.
D major, and for D [F#] major we can just strum [D] these top 4 strings.
That's all the chords in the whole song.
The verse consists of 8 measures.
Let's just play through it, and you'll see how it goes.
We'll just do 4 downstrokes for each measure.
Let's count along.
3, [A] 4, A, 3, 4, [E] E, 2, 3, back [A] to A, A, 2, 3, going up [D] to D, 2, 3, [A] 4, A, 2, 3, 4, A, 2,
3, 4, [E] A, 2, 3, 4, E, 2, 3, [D] 4, D, 2, 3, [A] 4, A, 2.
The strumming pattern goes like this.
1, and 2, and 3, and 4, and.
So what I'm doing there is I'm plucking the root of the chord.
In this case it's an A chord, so I'm hitting the A string, and then I'm strumming the rest
of the strings on and.
So 1, and, 2, and.
And I'll do that for all the chords in this song.
For [Fm] E, the [E] root is the low E string, and for D, [D] the root is the D string.
[G] Here's the [A] strumming pattern at regular speed.
Now [E]
[D] [A]
[G] let's try the strumming pattern with the chords from the verse.
We'll take it a bit slower.
2, 3, [A] 4, A,
[E] E, 2, 3, and [A] 4, back to A, and 2, and 3, and [D] 4, over to D, and 2, and 3,
and 4, [A] back to A, and 2, and 3, and 4, [E] over to E, and 2, and 3, over to D, [D] D, and 2, and
3, and 4, [A] and A, and 2, and 3, and 4, and.
The chorus uses just an A chord and a D chord, and the same strumming pattern as the verse.
We're going to play A two times, D one time, and then back to A one time, and then we're
going to repeat the whole thing.
Let's try it slowly.
3, and 4, and 1, and 2, and 3, and 4, and 1, and 2, and 3, and up to D, [D] 2, and 3, and
[A] back to A, 2, and 3, and 4, again.
A chord, play A again, and 2, and 3, and 4, [D] over to D chord, and [A] back to A, 2, and 3,
and 4, and.
I'm going to show you the lead using tab, which you'll see in the corner.
If you're unfamiliar with how to read tab, check out the description.
There's a link to a video where I explain how to read it, and also if you want a copy
of the tab for this part, there's a link in the description for that too.
First I'll start by playing the whole thing so you can see how it goes.
[C#] [A] [G#m] [A]
We start by putting our middle finger on the 10th fret of the B string, and we play that
note two times.
Then we play [B] the 12th fret, the same string, [A] and then back to the 10th fret.
[D#] And then the next part, we start on the 12th fret of the high E string, we start playing
that with our [C#] pinky, then we go down to our index finger on the 9th fret, then [Bm] on the
B string, 12th [D] fret, 10th fret.
[Em] So let's take a look at that one more time.
[G] [D] Let's put that all together.
[A] [A] [C#]
[A] [G#m] You can practice the lead over top the chorus.
[A]
[D] [A]
[D] [A]
[E]
[A] [D]
[A] [E]
[D] [A]
[D] [A]

So that was Three Little Birds by Bob Marley.
I hope you enjoyed the lesson.
