[G] [N] Hey, how you doing guys?
Andy with you for another song lesson.
Today we're taking a look at Pumped Up Kicks, Foster The People.
Fun song, nice and simple, only four chords involved and a cool little riff that you saw right there.
I have put together a little tab and chart for this one.
You can get it with the link down below.
While you're there, check out the Now Guitar VIP, completely free, secret lessons not available
here on YouTube.
You can see that on the page there.
So I'm going to zoom in and we'll run through the chords and the riff and we should have
you playing this in no time.
So [Em] the chords that we've got here for this are E minor, second fret, second fret on the
A and D strings.
[B] G is your next chord, third fret on the A, second fret [A#] on the A and third fret, third
fret on the bottom two [G] strings.
If you have any hassles with these [B] on the chart, I've got it there, the printout there for you.
[G] It'll help you out with these.
[D] D is going to be second fret on the G, third fret on the B and second fret on the E string
and finally A chord, [G#] which is going [N] to be your second fret, second fret, second fret
on the D, G and B [A] strings.
Cool.
If you still need [N] help with those, check out the cool resource that I've got for you, linked
through to some chord videos and some other good handy stuff.
Okay, so what are we doing for strumming here?
Well, we'll have a look at the strumming hand.
There's a few different things you can do, but the most fitting strumming pattern I suggest
is this going to be down, down, up, up, down.
I'll give it a play and then we'll break it [Em] down.
[G] [D]
[A] [A#]
So [Em] that is down, down, up, up, down.
You know that missing there.
Down, down, up, miss, up, [A#] down.
And then the same thing for each of the [Em] other chords.
Down, down, up, up, [G] down, G.
[D] [A]
[B] Alright, let's have a look at the riff.
Here it is.
A little closer again.
[E] [N] And you'll see from your chart that you've printed out.
You've got it there.
That it starts off on the fat E string.
And we're going to [E] get O, O, [B] O, 2.
[D] See that picking hand?
[E] O, O, [F#] O, [G] 2, 3.
3 again.
O, 2 on the [A] A string.
[B]
Then [D] open D.
O, O, A [B] string.
[A] 2, O, O, O.
And then on the E [E] string.
[F#] [G] 2, 3.
[A#] So, breaking that, putting it back together now.
Now that we've broken it apart.
[E]
O, O, [F#] O, [G] 2, 3.
3.
[A] [B] O, 2, [D] O, O, [B] O, [A] 2, O, O, [G] O, 3.
Fun to sing it with numbers, [E] hey?
[F#] [G] [A]
[B] [D] [A]
[G] [N] There it is.
OK, if you want to get real fan-dangled and clever and super amazing and stuffed, wow
aren't you friends?
What you [Em] can do is you can incorporate the chords with the riff.
How's [D] that for super duo magic?
So you can [Em] go
[E] [G]
[Bm] [D] [B] [A]
[F#m] [G] [N] How do you do that, you ask?
[E] Well, the first note of each of those bars where the chords are is the bass note of each
of the [B] chords, meaning [G] the lowest note.
So, in other words, [A#] in that first bar we [E] start on, which [Em] is, you can be strumming the E chord there.
[E]
[F#] [B] Next one should be [G] a G chord, where we're not picking that, it's part of the chord.
[A]
[Bm] [D] Next one, open D, part of the D chord.
[Bm] Open A, [G#m] [A] part of the A chord.
[B] So instead of playing those
[C] open, third fret, open, open, you're just playing the [D] whole
chord on [Em] top of it.
[E]
[F#] [G] [B] [D]
[A] [G]
[N] For those of you who feel like a bit of extra challenge.
So there it is for you guys.
