[N] Ladies and gentlemen, I cannot thank you enough,
your majesties, for just the honor of receiving
the great Pulitzer Prize today.
I never imagined in my life that I would even be in Sweden.
Never, ever imagined that as a little boy.
My dream was to be a surgeon.
Could you imagine that, Steve?
You wonder, Doctor, Doctor, if you're going to operate on me,
Steve, please open your eyes at least.
No.
But as much as I never imagined many things that have happened,
I'm so very happy [G#] that God used me as a vehicle,
hopefully to express the spirit of unity,
through music, oneness through music, peace through music,
[N] love through music, and the perpetuation and preservation
of life through music.
We still are, as we approach the end, just a little less,
a little more than six months away from a new millennium.
And yet we still, as much as we have grown technologically,
we haven't grown in many ways.
We are going to leave a lot for this generation
and the next generation to repair that we have,
previous generations, made not right.
But I have hope because I am one who believes
that God's promise is ever strong.
Love will conquer all.
I'm so very honored to be here in this country
and [G] to feel such love, not just today and yesterday,
but for the many times that I've been in this country.
I've always felt such love.
I remember in 1981 when I performed on my birthday, May 13th,
and we did a celebration to Bob Marley.
As we celebrate this year the centennial of the great Duke Ellington,
I would like to do a song that he wrote in honor of him, Saturn Doll.
