Roger Stevens, who is the songwriter for Wounded Warrior, brought this song to my attention
about the time that the VA hospitals and all that scandal was in the news.
And my dad, being a disabled veteran in World War II, lost two brothers in that war.
You know, doing nothing for me was not an option.
And I was proud to be able to lend my voice to this song to hopefully get the message
out and bring awareness to the attention of our veterans, especially our wounded warriors,
who come home to not a whole lot of options.
And so I want this message to stay in the forefront of people's minds for as long as
it takes to correct this disgraceful thing that's going on with our wounded warriors.
[Bm] [D]
[Em] [D] [Bm]
[D]
[Em] [D] First time that he fought [Bm] was for his country.
When [D] he left in 68 for Vietnam, [A] he willingly left all his [Bm] friends and family.
[G] Cause he heard the pleading voice [A] of Uncle Sam.
[G] And on that fateful night, [F#m] when he almost [Bm] lost his life, [Em] he knew right then he'd never
[A] be the same.
[D] Now the soldier fears defeat [Bm] as he shuffles on the street, [G] as he looks up to the heavens
[D] and the rain.
[G] And the fated purple heart that [F#m] he holds on to [Em] is the only recognition [D] of a man who [G] gave
up every dream [F#m]
that he ever had [E] so that we could still have freedom [A] in this land.
[G] And in the sleepless nights, [F#m] he relives those memories, [Em] this wounded warrior struggling [A] to survive.
[D] I guess that you could say [Bm] it kind of took him by surprise.
[G] Cause the last thing that he thought he'd [Em] have to fight for [D] was his pride.
[Bm]
Oh, was [D] his pride.
[Em]
[D] You'll see him in our towns and [Bm] in our cities.
[G] And you might not feel his pain as he [A] walks by.
[D] A word that long just cannot [Bm] tell his story.
[D] But you'll see it if he looks you in the [A] eye.
[G] Scars that never healed, [F#m] the friends he left [Bm] behind.
[Em] For him, that jungle war is still alive.
[A] [D] It's a never-ending battle [Bm] that he's fighting every day.
[D] This wounded warrior struggling to survive.
[G] And the fated purple heart that he [F#m] holds on to [Em] is the only [A] recognition of [D] a man who [G] gave
up [A] every dream [F#m] that he ever [Bm] had [E] so that we could still have freedom [A] in this land.
[G] And in the sleepless nights, [F#m] he relives those memories, [Em] this wounded warrior struggling
to [A] survive.
[D] Well, I guess that you could say it [Bm] kind of took him by surprise.
[G] Cause the last thing that he thought he'd have [E] to fight for was [A] [D]
his pride.
[Bm] Oh, [G] the last thing that [D] he thought he'd have [Em] to fight [A] for was [D] his pride.
[Bm]
[G] Was his [Em] pride.
His pride.
[Bm] His [D] pride.
That wounded warrior [G] pride.
[Em]
[D] Say, can you [Bm] see?
[D] Our wounded warrior living [Em] homeless on the street.
[D] Say, can you [Bm] see?
[G] Our wounded [D] warrior [Em] helpless on the [A]
street.
[D] [Bm] Helpless on the street.
[G] [Em] Giving back [D] his pride.
[Bm]
[D] Oh, [G] he's a busy [Em] man.
[A] [D] [D]
