Hey everybody, Bernie Hamburger here of Hamburger Guitar with another installment on how to play guitar solos and licks from The Beatles.
This time we're going to cover a song off The Beatles' sixth album.
This song is written by Buddy Holly.
It's titled Words of Love.
I'm going to play along with the recording and then I'm going to break it down for you without the recording.
First we're going to tackle the intro of [A] the song.
[D] [A]
[D] [A]
[D] [A]
[E] [A] Beatles time.
Okay, [Cm] so coming right out of the gate you'll hear it kind of barges right in with [C#m] a
and that just happens once at the [G#] beginning of the [A] song.
[Em] So it's basically an A flat shape, [A] just sliding up to [G#] A.
[A]
[D] [A]
[B] And then the first time, it's probably a mistake, but George left it that way anyhow,
but the first time he does the lick he just hits [E] the [D]
[E] E up here with the E note on the 5th fret B string and the E string open.
So he hits those simultaneously on the first time only.
[A] Then the [B] D shape down [A] here.
[D] [Em]
Open E.
[C#] B string, 2nd [B] fret.
[G#m] [A] [Em]
[B] But the 2nd and 3rd time he does the lick he hits the A note on the E string.
So I'll show you what I mean.
I'll do the first one without it.
[E] [D] [C#]
[A] [D]
[A] [Em] [A]
[Bm] [A]
[D] [A] [E] [A]
[Em] So that's the intro.
Now I'm going to show you the guitar solo.
So let me prompt that ahead in the song here to get to the guitar solo.
[D] [E]
[Am] Back it up a bit [D] here.
[E] [A]
[D] [E]
[A] [D] [E] [A]
[D] [E] [A]
[D] [E] [A]
[D] [E] [A]
[D] [A] [E] [A]
[D] [A]
[D] [A]
[D] [A]
[D] [E] [A]
[E] Okay, so right out of the
As soon as that second verse vocally comes to a close, it'll start right here.
And most of the solo, or at least the first half of it, is only performed on the E and the B strings only.
So it starts right here.
4th fret, 5th fret, 7th fret, 9th fret, B string.
So it's then [B] 9th fret, E string, 10th fret, B [A] string.
Then you bar both of these on the 5th fret.
[C#m] E string open, B string, 2nd fret.
[Am] Back to that.
[F#m] Which is [N]
5th fret, 1st string, 2nd string, [F#m] 7th fret.
[E] [A] Peace.
[F#m]
[E] [A]
[E] And you're hearing me sliding and sweeping [G] up and down because it's actually played like that.
[E] It's not just
[A]
That would sound too robotic.
Even though [B] those are the positions in the notes, you actually have to slide to and fro as you make your way from one to the other.
So I'll start it over [E] again at the beginning.
It slides.
[A]
[F#m] [E] [A]
[F#m] [E]
[A]
[E] [A]
[B] B string [A] open, G string, A note.
Then [D] F sharp, D, [A] A, E, D flat, [B]
B.
[A#] [A]
[G] And just the 3 [A] strings.
[Em] And [A] E open.
Then you slide the D chord up to D.
So it's like a D [C#m] flat and it slides.
[D]
[A] [E] [A]
[C#m] [D] [Em]
[A] [D] [A]
[D] [A]
[E] [A] And that's [Em] the end of the solo.
[A] [D]
[A] [C#] [D]
[A] [G] [A] [D]
[A] [G] [A]
[D] [A] [E] [A] [Gm]
Well there you have it.
[N] Words of love.
The guitar intro and the guitar solo.
I do take requests and I welcome your comments.
Stay tuned for more videos as we go down the road here.
Thank you.
