[Am] [A]
[E] [A] [N] Eva Cassidy has a phenomenal knack, unfortunately had a phenomenal knack, for taking a song
and turning it into a song that really maybe doesn't even seem like a guitar song, and
coming up with a great accompaniment to back up her, of course, phenomenal voice.
Now we're going to take a look at what she did with Joni Mitchell's song, Woodstock,
that Joni's version was a fairly abstract piano piece, and of course Steve Stills and
friends took it and turned it into a rocker.
Now Joni, of course, wrote this [F] shortly after
missing Woodstock, because she had to [Gb] appear on the Dick Cavett Show and decided that was
a better move.
But the song, of course, Matthew Southern Comfort also did a very popular version.
Now [Eb] the chord progression is kind of vague and stuff, but so Eva did a great job of hinting
at the chords that happen in here, and I tabbed out pretty much what she does in the first
verse with some minor variations, I didn't do any of the variations, she just does a
few little random things later.
Now her style, of course, consists of her arpeggio [A] style,
is really just a simple, sometimes random [G] set of notes using her thumb and three [Bb] fingers
to hit strings one at a time, sometimes together, and some nice little moves that connect chords.
So we're going to take a look at all of that.
I'll play through what I have in the tab,
or an approximation [Eb] of it, so if you want to just kind of follow along and read it and
listen to it, [F] and then you can tackle it on your own, but of course I will break it down
a little bit more as we go.
This is, by the way, on [C] her album Time After Time, so if you
don't have it, you've got to get it.
I mean, you have to have everything she did, it's
just spectacular.
[N] Okay, I will play through it kind of following the tab, which means
probably with a few mistakes.
It opens up with the intro, which we'll also refer to
as a vamp a little bit later on, and then there's just a verse and a chorus, and really
only a couple of chords, something like this.
[E] [A] [Am]
And into the verse.
[E]
[D] [A] [D]
[G] [E]
First ending, [Am] repeating
now, second half of the verse.
[A]
[D]
[Am] [Em]
And then into the chorus, [D] very simple chords in here.
[G] [C]
[G] [D] [E]
[A] [E] [Am]
[A] [Am] So
there you have what I have in the [N] tab.
Now we'll take a look, I'll talk a little bit
about her right hand, a little bit about the left hand, and then we'll kind of walk
through it section by section.
Coming up, Eva Cassidy's great, great rendition of Woodstock.
That was the first segment of a seven or eight part lesson I put together on Eva Cassidy's
arrangement of Joni Mitchell's tune, Woodstock, obviously.
And the lesson goes into great
detail, I've got a page of tab and a page of just the chords and the words that come
along with it, as all of our stuff that is available at Totally Guitars.
Now this is
part of the Target program there that is kind of our premium lesson plan, or like at least
500 lessons, or close to 500 [G] now in the [F] Target program.
We have a lot of other free lessons
to get you started on stuff that's a little less complicated than [F] this, but if you'd like
to check out the lesson on Woodstock, be sure to come visit [Eb] us at Totally Guitars and think
about, well, checking out and or joining the Target program.
[Gb] Just an amazing library's
worth of stuff that is available there at Totally Guitars.
