In this guitar lesson video, I'm going to teach you all how to play Wildwood Flower.
It's an old folk song
It was originally published back in 1860 and then later in
1928 the original Carter family band recorded this one.
Awesome song, it's been around forever
Really [G] good one to help work on that right hand technique.
And so in this video
I'm going to teach you all two versions of this song
The first one is more traditional version similar to how Maybel Carter played it
And then the second version is going to be a little more intermediate to advanced for those cross pickers out there
And so anyways, let me play through both of these versions just so [E] you can get an idea of what we're about to learn
[F] [C] [Am]
[G] [C]
[F] [G] [C]
[F] [C]
[G] [C]
[Gm]
[B] [C] [A]
[Em] [G] [C]
[F] [C]
[G] And [C]
so I use this song all the time [E] myself as kind of like a drill or an exercise to help me work on my right
Hand pick technique because in between playing these chords and all the strumming and stuff
You're gonna be picking out individual strings and kind of keeping that melody [Em] line going
[F] [C]
[Em] [C]
so a really really cool technique to work on used [Abm] all the time in country and bluegrass music and
Good thing is you can use the same technique over tons of different chord progressions once you get it [G] down
It sounds really really good.
So
[E] Awesome technique to work on and that's kind of why I wanted to teach this song so y'all could use it to help y'all improve
right hand pick accuracy also and
Also as you're learning this one keep in mind that the left hand there's not gonna be a ton of [A] stuff going on
Pretty much just holding down these basic [B] open chords.
You got a C [C] major
[G] You got a g7 [F] and a F major
[Bm] And so just not [G] much going on with the left hand every once in a while
You'll have to lift up one of your fingers to pick [E] up a different melody line note
[C] But most of the works can be done with that right [Bb] hand in this song
[Abm] So let's start breaking down this traditional version of Wildwood Flower
I'm gonna play through it a couple different times first round three is gonna be a little bit slower and
Second round three is gonna be a little bit quicker
And as I'm playing [Db] along the tablature software is just gonna track note for note along [B] with me
So you can follow along with the tablature and like I mentioned in the previous video
Not a ton going on with the left hand just gonna be holding down these basic open chords
And [F] then you'll be lifting up fingers here and there to pick up different melody line notes
And so be sure to pay attention to the chords that I wrote in above each bar on this tablature and
Also pay close attention to the down pick and the up pick triangles below the [N] tablature notes
So anyways, let's get straight to it and let's start playing through this thing at the slow speed

[C]
One [E] two three
[F] [C]
[G]
[C]
[G] [C]
[F]
[C]
[G] [C]
[N]
So that is how you play the more traditional version of the song and so pretty much that little section
We just learned repeats over and over again, and that's the entire song
The only difference is at the ending you can add on one more bar of C to kind of make it sound like a proper ending
[Db] But anyways, if you are up for the challenge at this point head over to the intermediate to advanced lesson video
Where we're going to go over the intermediate version that really incorporates a ton of cross picking
Awesome stuff and so hope to see all over [C] there
[F] [C]
